Goldman Sachs has Turned Nature Conservancy Shrines Into Cattle Concentration Camps
Henry Paulson, the Bush nominated Secretary of the Treasury, was formerly CEO of Goldman Sachs as well as President of Nature Conservancy. Wearing 2 hats, he introduced cattle to the NC wilderness shrines. Josh Bolton, Bush's chief of staff is also from Goldman Sachs.

Ann Veneman has gone from the American Meat Institute where she was mentored by Richard Lyng to the USDA Secretary chair, and from there to UNICEF where she is attempting to spread American animal cadavers and toxic vaccines to the children of the world.

National Public Radio has acquired 200 million in McDonald's
stock. Merck, vivisector, underwrites its "The World" originating
in Boston. NPR's sponsors include Cargill, which supplies
most of McDonald's eggs. Two private equity firms in Boston connected
to vivisector money have just bought over 400 stations in
the illegal Clear Channel monopoly chain. Please disinvest your $ from mutual funds and pension systems which own animal slaughter or vivisection stock.

There will be little, if any, remembrance of the men and women who fought for freedom in far more aggressive, and militant ways. While some may hear the occasional names, usually they too are softened and sweetened with time, to make them safe historical morsels for white, and corporate consumption.

For years, decades now, folks have celebrated Black History Month, with a plethora of events. There will be movies, book readings, poetry events, concerts and the like. Coming, as it does, on the heels of the nation's celebration of the life of Martin Luther King, Jr., much of what will be heard will no doubt echo that event.

But Black History is far richer, and far deeper than King.

justice." - Mumia Abu-Jamal

Impeachment In Washington -- Round 2

Support impeachment by attending a Rally on March 1st at 1 p.m. at the State Capitol and the hearing in the Cherberg Bldg. Hearing Room 2, starting at 3:30 p.m. Contact your state legislators and Congressional delegation to let them know you want an impeachment investigation.

On March 1st, the Washington Senate will hold a hearing on SJM 8016 that petitions Congress to begin impeachment investigations into the actions of Bush and Cheney. The hearing will be held in the Cherberg Building, Hearing Room 2 on the Capitol Campus, from 3:30 - 5:30 p.m. A panel of speakers will present the pros and cons, and then it will be opened up to comments from the public. Written testimony is accepted and is not limited to residents of Washington State.

Murray and Inslee oppose impeachment

Patty Murray and Jay Inslee' efforts to stop the impeachment movement in Washington became public today in a Seattle Times story. It is clear that Murray has not read the bill, which asks for investigations into the actions of both Bush and Cheney about the use of fraudulent evidence to persuade Congress and the American people to support a pre-emptive strike in Iraq.

The Bill--SJM 8016 simply lists a number of serious allegations about Bush and Cheney and their administration, perpetrating a fraud, illegally spying on citizens, arresting and imprisoning people without due process, and engaging in torture. The question before the state legislature is simply this: are these violations serous enough to warrant an investigation? If yes, then the bill petitions Congress to do its job and begin impeachment investigations. This bill, unlike other memorials, will go the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives for them to decide whether or not to begin impeachment investigations.

Third Planet Report 3/1/07
This week's Third Planet Report has the following interviews and music:

1. Interview with Ina May Gaskin, internationally known midwife about the care crisis. Are we ignoring the most important people in our society--women--who care for our children, our elders and yes, the guys;

2. Interview with Jim Coon, attorney for the wife of deceased Jesse Williams who died from smoking cigarettes over many years due to the deceptive practices of Phillip Morris. The US Supreme Court recently vacated the 79 million dollar punitive damages award against the tobacco giant. Jim tells us that punitives are still very much alive and he isn't worried at all;

3. Interview with the former attorney Albert Bates for atomic veterans and veterans with agent orange claims, who talks about his personal experience in the airport and why he is worried that the new x-ray machines may be causing more harm than the "terrorists" they are protecting us against; and

4. Banah Graf and friends place some really cool rock from Santa Barbara. Their sound is unique and catchy and deserves a listen (spoken like a proud dad).

IDF detains TV director, attacks journalists during Nablus raid

At around 3:00 a.m. on February 26, Israeli soldiers detained Nabegh Break, owner and managing director of the local Sanabel TV, after raiding his home in Nablus' Old City, an eyewitness told CPJ. When the troops arrived at Break's apartment, they ordered his family to leave and took Break to the first floor, which houses Sanabel TV's office. After about two hours of questioning, the soldiers seized computers and other equipment and left with Break, the eyewitness said. Break was taken to Israel's Hawara detention center south of Nablus where he remains held without charge.

On Sunday, Omar Mohammad Afaneh, a broadcaster for the privately-owned local television station Asia TV, told CPJ that he was roughed up by Israeli soldiers while conducting an interview with Dr. Ghassan Hamdan, the head of the Palestinian Medical Relief Society in Nablus, about the health effects of Israel's curfew on the city. Afaneh was ordered to turn off the camera but he refused. Several soldiers began pushing him, ripped his jacket, and an Israeli captain seized the videotape.

Report on Blumenauer "anti-war" meeting: more of the same
Earl Blumenauer, in an attempt to weasel out of supporting progressive legislation like HR 508, presented his own HR 663, a masterfully constructed bit of fluff that, attendees agreed, would do nothing other than increase the chances of Earl receiving future support from corporate hacks.

While several Democrat operatives attempted to change the focus to worshipful topics, the majority of attendees at a Blumenauer meeting held today at DiPrima Dolci Italian Bakery on N. Killingworth Ave. to discuss his "New Direction for Iraq Act" were angry and impatient with Blumenauer and his DLC comrades for their obfuscation of those issues which they most care about: defunding the occupation of Iraq, impeachment of war criminals, and ending the support of US-Israel in the Middle East. (Members of the pro-Palestine community will be glad to know that one of Earl's contingent told us how exemplary his record was.)

Five-Year-Old Astoria Peace Gathering threatened, again
From two to scores of people have stood at the Astoria Post Office east lawn as witnesses for peace and in support of our civil liberties every single Friday from 5 to 6 PM for the past five years. Now, the new post master says the Peace gathering is trespassing on the post office lawn, and must get on the sidewalk, single-file. This exact same situation occurred in May of 2002, and with the help of the Daily Astorian newspaper, the peace witnesses prevailed. Last week, however, the police did show up, though after the gathering had concluded, and threatened anyone who stood on the lawn with arrest.

So we'll be out on the lawn on Friday, just like every other.

Report Back From Olympia Anti-Recruitment Action
A group of 8 people met in Yauger park at 10 AM this Saturday. It was raining and, much to my dismay, one of the main busses that would have taken people to the park was not running. As we were waiting there, we saw a bunch of amerikan flags by the recruiting center across the street. It became clear that these were counter-protesters.

We walked over to the center and began to mingle with the freedom fighters. The center, which was supposed to be open from 10-1 was closed, the doors locked and the blinds down. The patriots outnumbered us by nearly 2 to 1. Nevertheless, we stayed there for about 2 hours, talking with them. One man lost his cool and started yelling at one of us. He angrily stormed off and, soon after, 2 cops arrived but nothing happened with them. Finally, we got tired and left.

Video from Current Nablus Invasion - Day 1
On February 25 2007, the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) invaded the West Bank city of Nablus with massive forces. The IOF focussed especially on the Yasmine and Qariyon neighborhoods in the old city. During the first day of the operation, tens of thousands of people were confined to their homes. The Israeli army raided dozens of houses, detaining and arresting scores of people. This military operation is one of the biggest of its kind in the last two or three years that happenend in Nablus.

Here are the links to a short video clip done by indypendent media activists in Nablus. This short film is produced by the Research Journalism Initiative (RJI) and the anarchist film collective "a-films". We're trying to keep up with the current happenings as far as the circumstances allow us to do so.

Iranians Fear U.S. is Preparing to Attack: Interview with David Barsamian, author and radio producer
Just days after anonymous U.S. military officials in Baghdad briefed reporters on what they asserted was evidence of sophisticated roadside bombs and other weapons provided by Iran to Shiite militias inside Iraq who are attacking U.S. soldiers, the government of Iran has made a counter claim. Officials in Tehran charged that two bombings carried out by Sunni insurgents inside Iran, which killed 11 people and wounded 30, were provoked by the United States and Britain. An Iranian news agency quoted what it said were informed sources as declaring that the explosives used in the bombings were made in the U.S.

Tensions between Washington and Iran have risen in recent weeks over a Feb. 21 U.N. Security Council deadline for Tehran to suspend its enrichment of uranium. This comes as the Bush administration has dispatched two aircraft carrier groups off the coast of Iran and arrested dozens of Iranians, including diplomats, inside Iraq. Iran has reacted to White House saber-rattling with three days of war games staged by the nation's elite Revolutionary Guards, simulating resistance to an enemy air strike.

David Barsamian, an author and radio producer, recently returned from a 10-day trip to Iran. Without restriction or government chaperones, he spoke informally with hundreds of Iranians. Many told him that President Bush's actions have only weakened moderates inside Iran. Between The Lines Scott Harris spoke with Barsamian about how the threat of a U.S. attack is perceived among the Iranians he met and how he believes activists in the U.S. can be most effective in preventing war.

Report for Tacoma Anti-Recruitment/Anti-Militarism Rally & Carnival
On February 24, 2007, a protest/rally/carnival was held at military recruitment center in Tacoma, WA. This action was planned in coordination with same-day events in Bellingham and Olympia.

We may have easily been outnumbered by police, with a count of 9 cop cars, at least 4 bicycle cops, and one van. Plus the littering of cop cars, bike cops, and even a paddy wagon around the Tacoma mall parking lot wasted some of the State's money and resources, and demonstrated the city of Tacoma's distrust of its residents mobilizing for the interests of the people.

But we held signs, expressed to passersby our opposition to the war and complicity of recruiters in sending people to die and kill for elite interests, handed out some counter-recruitment information to passersby, and some participants went into the center to "get some info about joining the military." A banner reading "END WAR - STOP RECRUITING" was discovered nearby over I-5 the same day.

New Prison Dispatch from Jeffrey Free Luers
Jeffrey Free Luers Thursday, February 15th was just like any other morning for me. I woke up at six, went down to breakfast and ate with my friends. I came back to my cell and turned on the morning news. My cellie went back to sleep, covering his eyes from the light of the TV as I made a cup of coffee.

I had just started paying attention when the ticker at the bottom of the screen read, 'The man who set fire to three SUVs as an environmental protest, will serve a shorter sentence than originally planned.'

Jeffrey Free Luers desperately needs financial support!

All of us are still digesting the positive news from last week regarding Jeff's appeal and we wanted everyone to know how grateful we are to each and every one of you that has supported Jeff over the years in whatever way you could. Jeff has garnered support from all over the world and we never could have imagined that this could have happened back when Jeff was first arrested almost 7 years ago now.

In the coming months we will be finding out more about Jeff's re-sentencing - the court date and possible outcome, etc. - and in the meantime we need your support more than ever. To put it simply, Jeff needs money. Jeff's legal costs and attorney fees, on top of on-going daily expenses, are just something that can't be covered with our current bank account and financial support.

The Rape of Sabrine
Al Jazeerah news channel is running a story of an interview with an Iraqi woman who has accused three Iraqi policeman of raping her after detaining her over this past weekend as part of the security "surge". Her crime was cooking for Sunni insurgents. The Iraqi prime minister has called for an investigation. An Iraqi police official has denied the charge. What is of interest to me is that this story prompted a posting from Riverbend an Iraqi woman who has been blogging from Baghdad for the last almost four years. However for the last six months, her postings have become more infrequent.

As someone who has been following her story, she has been one Iraqi voice who could share her observations and reactions to the American occupation. As her postings have become more infrequent, I became concerned that she had fallen victim to the civil war or perhaps that she and her family had finally decided to leave Baghdad, as so many families have decided to do. She is in her mid 20's, most likely of Sunni background, computer literate and interested in the western culture. Increasingly though her attitudes towards Americans have become more indifferent as the American occupation continues to fail her country. In April of 2005, Al Jazeerah posted an interview

She ends her most recent posting as follows: "And yet, as the situation continues to deteriorate both for Iraqis inside and outside of Iraq, and for Americans inside Iraq, Americans in America are still debating on the state of the war and occupation- are they winning or losing? Is it better or worse. Let me clear it up for any moron with lingering doubts: It's worse. It's over. You lost. You lost the day your tanks rolled into Baghdad to the cheers of your imported, American-trained monkeys. You lost every single family whose home your soldiers violated. You lost every sane, red-blooded Iraqi when the Abu Ghraib pictures came out and verified your atrocities behind prison walls as well as the ones we see in our streets. You lost when you brought murderers, looters, gangsters and militia heads to power and hailed them as Iraq's first democratic government. You lost when a gruesome execution was dubbed your biggest accomplishment. You lost the respect and reputation you once had. You lost more than 3000 troops. That is what you lost America. I hope the oil, at least, made it worthwhile."

It's Just a Farce: Ward Churchill and the Research Misconduct Inquisition
On May 16th, 2006, an Investigative Committee of the Standing Committee on Research Misconduct at the University of Colorado, Boulder, released its report concerning allegations of research misconduct leveled at Ward L. Churchill, a tenured professor of Native American Studies at the University, and a prolific writer, public speaker, and Native American activist. In the report, the committee stated that it had unanimously found Ward L. Churchill guilty of "serious" and "deliberate" research misconduct.

The report was the culmination of a lengthy year and a half long inquisition initiated against Ward Churchill in retaliation for comments he made in an essay entitled "Some People Push Back" and the follow-up book, On the Justice of Roosting Chickens, both of which concerned the events of 9-11. In the essay, Churchill argued against the popular public belief in the innocence of the World Trade Center victims by labeling them a "technocratic corps" that functioned as the organizers and facilitators of U.S. empire, and comparing them to Adolf Eichmann, the architect of the Nazi perpetuated holocaust during World War II.

Immediately, a well coordinated media inquisition began. Headed by Fox News commentator Bill O'Reilly, a chorus of moral outrage that spanned the political spectrum grew throughout the country. The goal of this media witch hunt was to force the University of Colorado to fire Ward Churchill for his remarks about 9-11.

Eight days after its official beginning, the general strike continues in Guinea. The production of C.G.B, the second leading Bauxite producer in the world, has been halted, the workers also having stopped the trains carrying ore, while the production of the other consortium continues to grind towards a halt (provoking incendiary inflation in the prices of bauxite and aluminum on the world market). All economic activities are paralysed.

Olympia Port Militarization Resistance launches campaign to close port to Iraq shipments
Olympia, WA, February 22, 2007 - Olympia Port Militarization Resistance (OlyPMR), a local grassroots organization, has launched a campaign to end the community's participation in the illegal and immoral occupation of Iraq. OlyPMR seeks to prevent the US military from using the Port of Olympia to ship equipment to Iraq as part of President Bush's escalation of the conflict. Olympia Port Militarization Resistance plans public education, lobbying and non-violent civil disobedience designed to end the community's participation in the illegal occupation of Iraq by stopping the US military's use of the Port of Olympia.

Since the US invasion in 2003, the US Army has shipped equipment bound for Iraq through the Port of Olympia. The shipments to Iraq mark the first time in over fifteen years that the Port of Olympia has accepted military cargo. According to Olympia City Councilman TJ Johnson "a majority of Americans and local residents oppose the continued occupation of Iraq, and an even stronger majority oppose Bush's escalation. Using the Port of Olympia to ship equipment to Iraq goes against the will of the majority in the US and within our own community. Therefore, we have a democratic responsibility to resist."

Grannies Arrested At Gordon Smith's Office

For a 61 year old woman, I had a terrifically interesting day. On Wednesday, February 20, 2007 I got arrested - along with another 78 year old woman named Dot. We entered Sen. Gordon Smith's office and asked the receptionist if we couldn't speak to Senator Smith or one of his aides. We were informed that Senator Smith was in Salem today - and no aide except one involved with immigration issues was present in the office today. I asked if Sen. Smith or his aides would be in his office tomorrow and I was told that in order to speak to the senator a voter would have to submit a request in writing. The receptionist's answer was an acceptable response - but she ignored the fact I had just indicated that we would be willing to speak to one of his aides in consideration of the busy senator's schedule. I did not believe a "written request should be necessary to speak to one of the senator's aides so at this point I wondered, "Does this senator believe he has any obligation to the citizen - to his fellow Oregonians?" Why wouldn't a telephone call provide the senator OR one of his aides with sufficient notice that one of his constituents had a desire to express an opinion on an important and pressing issue such as the Iraq war. I felt that the receptionist was being evasive - and that the senator was prepared to duck and dodge any request for a serious conversation on the issue. At this point, I did sit down and wrote out a letter requesting some time with the senator, himself, within 7 working days since I felt that the effort of a written request warranted more than a few moments with one of the senator's office staff.

More Arrests At Senator Gordon Smith's Office

Wednesday afternoon Dot Lukins and Kathleen Bushman went up to Senator Gordon Smith's office to talk about their concerns about the Iraq war. They were told that there was no one in the office that could talk to them. They wanted to express their hope that the Senator would vote in a manner consistent with his statements about the war and therefore vote to defund the Iraq war. When they said they would not leave until receiving assurance that Senator Smith would agree to de-fund the war, they were arrested. Why did these two women who have never been previously arrested take this action? Dot (73) took this action because "I grieve when I see the names this week of 26 American young people killed, and when I see the young maimed in body and mind from this misbegotten war". Kathleen (61) says "I realized that if my own words mean anything, I too should take more effective action on behalf of all our fine young men and women- I would very much like to see them come home alive" Sen. Smith's constituents will continue to step forward. The "Grannies/Surge Protection Brigade" will be doing civil resistance today (22nd) and other people will continue the effort over the coming weeks. They will stop when Senator Smith does the one thing he can do to stop the war, which is to defund the war.
