On Mt. Hood, logging proceeds apace. And "apace" means devastation. It means the death of watersheds, ecosystems. It means economic and ecological disaster. Learn how to stop it. The action camp will run from Thursday, July 19th, to Monday, July 23rd.
Two weeks from now, you'll have the opportunity to learn the skills that you can use to confront this atrocity. Come join Stumptown Earth First! at beautiful Shellrock Lake for five days of education and non-violent direct action. Learn to climb old growth, and learn how to save it. Learn wilderness skills, activist skills. It's all free, of course, and although food will be provided, we could always use help providing it.
If you can't make it to the action camp, but are interested in learning direct action skills, there will be a one-day direct action training in Laurelhurst Park on Sunday, July 22nd. This event, which runs all day, is being put on by Students for Unity, Rising Tide North America, and the West Coast Convergence For Climate Action.
NEXT OLIN STUDY/DISCUSSION GROUP IS JULY 9TH AT 6 PM. We will be watching the movie "The Conquest Continues" about Plan Puebla Panama. We will also be discussing the article at the following link. So read up, and come participate in the discussion.
any questions ---> firstname.lastname@example.org Olin hosts a study group in Portland Oregon the second Monday of every month from 6 to 8 pm. We are meeting at In Other Words Women's Books and Resources 8 NE Killingsworth St, Portland, OR
We will discuss such issues as the current uprising in Oaxaca, the Zapatistas and la otra campana, neoliberalism, social movements in Mexico, and border issues.
Olin is an autonomous collective in Sin Fronteras Portland. Sin Fronteras's aim is to combat capitalism and white supremacy as systems of domination and to link the anti-capitalist struggles of Latin America to our own struggles here at home.
On Monday, June 11th, two fourteen year old girls were forced off of public transportation(TriMet) when a fellow passenger complained that they were kissing. The driver of the bus allegedly referred to the girls as "Sickos" and told them to "knock it off." When one of the girls became visibly distraught, the other hugged her in a show of comfort, and they were promptly ejected from the bus.
To call attention to the issue, "The Great Kiss-In" has been organized for Sunday, July 8th at 2 pm. Members of the LGBTQ community will gather at 701 SW 6th Ave, in front of Trimet's offices, to kiss in a show of solidarity with the girls. Their message is that everyone has the right to show their loved ones affection. All allies welcome.
This August 8-14 hundreds of social justice and environmental activists from around the west coast of North America will be convening near the mouth of the Columbia River for 6 days of low impact living and high impact action against the fossil fuel industry - the West Coast Convergence for Climate Action.
The Columbia River is fueled by tributaries from across the west. Today, with massive fossil fuel development projects planned at the mouth of this iconic waterway, the Columbia is ground zero in the global struggle against the violence of the energy industry and for a livable climate future. Part networking and activist skills training, part community sustainability demonstration site, the Convergence also aims to take collective action to stop the fossil fuel industry expansion in our region in its tracks.

PRE-CONVERGENCE DIRECT ACTION TRAINING
Over the past months, our hearts grew heavy as we watched our friends, comrades, and heroes be arrested and held in captivity. As defendants are being sentenced, this concludes the chapter of actions that had been turned into legends, songs, and inspiration. Out of the fire and ashes of repression, our hope is that others will come out stronger and wiser. Hopefully, there are still a few of you out there, brave enough to hope, and strong enough to act. It is to you who this story is dedicated. For every forest destroyed...
From its enchanting beginnings to its heart-breaking end, The Secret World of Terijian is a tale for the starry-eyed youth in us all. The book is a benefit for all targets of the Green Scare; all proceeds after production costs will go directly to earth and animal liberation prisoners and defendants.

A large group of protesters of all ages and demographics met under the bridge in Peaceful Valley today [July 4]. A few speeches were read aloud, reading off statistics of deaths by police brutality as compared to deaths of police on the job. A few police officers came up, and wanted to announce to us all that they support our right to protest and march, so long as we don't violate any traffic laws, and don't block traffic or anything of the sort, then there would be no problems whatsoever and we would be free to peacefully assemble and speak out.
The march went wonderfully. Police cruisers kept in constant eyesight, making sure nothing illegal was done. Lots of cars honked, waved, and shouted their support. We ended in Riverfront Park, near the clock tower, where our group proceeded to sit down to enjoy a picnic. The police continued taking photographs, so we photographed them back. We asked one for his badge number and name, and he refused, saying we didn't have the right to know that. In response, Zach was accosted, handcuffed, choked, and beaten, right in front of all of us. One officer grabbed my friend Meg by the throat and threw her to the ground. I yelled at him, "Why did you do that!? She didn't do anything wrong? What is your problem? No one is doing anything illegal! Let Zach go!" Police called for reinforcements, at least 30-40 of them showed up, and had a huge grip of zip ties in hand.
Annie's Cabin timber sale, a Bureau of Land Management (BLM) proposal to thin 566-acres within the Molalla River Recreation Corridor, contract has been rewarded to Freres Lumber Company. This timber sale would severely impact recreational trails designated for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding created by volunteers. Sensitive species such as Oregon Slender Salamanders, Red Tree Voles, and Tall Bughane have been found within this timber sale project and would also be impacted.
16 of the 25 units of the Annie's Cabin timber sale either have the Molalla River Recreation Corridor's Shared-Use Trail System running through units or abutting the units with no buffers. This trail system was created in the 1990s when the BLM closed 13 miles of logging roads converting these roads into trails for hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian uses. In 1994, the BLM approved the development of 12 miles of additional single-track trails in partnership with volunteer organizations. Thinning of Unit #2 would impact Amanda's Trail, Mark's Trail, and Sandquist's Trail, three trails named for early advocates and builders of the trail system. We need to protect and preserve the scenic beauty of these trails that volunteers spent long hours to create and maintain!
TAKE ACTION NOW TO PROTECT MOLALLA RIVER RECREATION CORRIDOR. Contact Congresswoman Darlene Hooley to tell her office to urge the BLM to cancel this timber sale.
Many perform on the streets simply to give free art to the world. Many perform for political reasons, to spread a political message on public streets, as in the tradition of agit-prop (agitational propaganda). But most buskers have had days when they are playing because they need the money, not because they want to. On these days, it is more attractive than ever to "sell out." I interviewed some buskers to find out what "selling out" looks like in a busker context.
On July 1st 2007, the third annual Indigenous anti-canada day event was held in Coast Salish Territories (vancouver, B.C.). A rail line in the native neighbourhood of Commercial Drive was blockaded as part of Indigenous People's ongoing resistance to the occupation of our territories by the state of Canada and capitalist corporations. This was one of many actions across the continent.
Over 200 Indigenous women, children, Elders and men (and non-native supporters) took the streets and the train tracks on a march and blockade to mark their resistance to Canada as an oppressive force against their people. The march began at Grandview Park and proceeded down Commercial Drive to Venables Street where the CN rail lines were occupied and blocked for over an hour.
Yesterday, July 2nd, Daniel McGowan self reported to prison in NYC and is now in custody. Daniel went to MDC Brooklyn yesterday morning to self surrender but they did not have him designated to that facility yet. He was advised to instead report to the US Marshals (at the Brooklyn Federal Courthouse) who agreed to transport him to MDC last night. Please take a minute to write a supportive letter to him.
Democratic Presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich spoke to a large gathering Sunday evening, July 1, 2007 at Benson High School, his speech focusing mainly on the need for universal health care and Globalization. His talk lasted about 25 minutes, and the remainder of this 47 minute audio file is questions and answers from the audience. Oddly, he didn't mention the Iraq war that much, or even his early ongoing opposition
Dennis, as is usually the case, was very eloquent, to the point and demonstrated a way to take our country back from corporate control. Yes, he skirted the 911 issue; yes, he wasn't extremely forthcoming concerning some issues dear to the far left. But, he only had so much time and I believe he made good use of
Local videographer Carey Klein, better known as Deva, will file a lawsuit today against Officer Mark Zylawy and the City of Portland for assaulting him while he was filming a World Can't Wait Protest at the Lloyd Center. Deva is well known to the Portland Police. He has been recording police conduct at demonstrations for many years. Some of his videos have been used in past lawsuits against Portland police officers for use of excessive force, including the case of Marbet v. City of Portland in which the City of Portland paid over half a million dollars in damages and legal fees to victims of indiscriminate use of pepper spray at demonstrations.
This lawsuit arises from an incident on January 31, 2006, when he was recording a group of protesters as they exited the Lloyd Center. The protest was organized by World Can't Wait to demand an end to the Bush regime. Because Deva was filming the protest from behind, he was the last person out as the group exited the Lloyd Center. A security guard grabbed him and said, "Time for you to go!" Shortly thereafter, Officer Zylawy pushed Deva from behind, without provocation or warning, causing him to fall on the concrete parking lot. The fall caused injuries to Deva's elbow, shoulder and hip. Deva refuses to let the incident intimidate him or discourage him from monitoring police misconduct, but he takes the incident very seriously. He has chosen to sue the officer and the City of Portland for this assault because he feels that it is essential for police officers to be held accountable when they attack the people who monitor their behavior.
Dennis Kucinich has a bill before Congress (HR 676) to provide Universal, Single-Payer, NOT FOR PROFIT Health Care. HR 676 takes health care away from the insurance companies and gives it back to the physicians.
On Jan. 24, 2007, Reps. John Conyers and Dennis Kucinich led 43 other House members in introducing HR 676, the Conyers/Kucinich Health Care bill. Today the bill, which Kucinich helped write, is supported by 76 members of Congress, 250 union locals, and more than 14,000 physicians. HR 676 is endorsed by the New Hampshire State Legislature and by Michael Moore, producer of SICKO.
Call your members of Congress and tell them to support HR 676, the Conyers/Kucinich Health Care bill. 1-800-459-1887, 1-800-828-0498.

This is a news article because it's important that on this day many Portlanders will find themselves more interested in firing off Chinese fireworks than understanding how their constitution is being shreded. Your support is needed to hand our flyers, dvds, and leaflets. Here are some of this things I discuss:
The current PHASE of the centralization of power
The phony left right paradigm
The media monopoly
The Federal Reserve
Police / Surveillance issues

"Paid Buskers" is an oxymoron. Buskers, or street performers, are defined by the fact that they have a hat out for tips in the public square. A current program sponsored by the Seattle Parks and Recreation Dept. is paying buskers to play in Seattle parks this summer, and it has raised some controversy, regarding the idea of "paid busking." But buskers are paid in tips regularly, and it is not unusual for large festivals to hire buskers for their events to add ambiance.
I have been a street performer since 1978. I still have my Seattle Pike Place Market 1978 Street Performer Permit. I have busked in a ridiculous array of venues this lifetime. I have performed on the Santa Cruz Mall, on Santa Barbara's State Street, in New Orleans' French Quarter, in Seattle's Pike Place Market, in Austin, TX, at San Francisco's Wharf, on the Boardwalk in Venice, CA...each city has its own relationship with busking and buskers. Each city has its own unique busker culture. As an actual busker myself, I find it frustrating often, the way journalists who only see our culture from outside, portray us. I am happy to be able to talk about this in first person, as few journalists can.
My partner sold her property in Multnomah County in June, 2004 and moved in with me in Washington County.
Recently, she received a letter from Multnomah County requesting that she provide "proof" she was not a resident in 2005. This got my dander up - what if every government organization chased you around with this kind of crap when you moved? I sent them a letter that said that if my partner had been a resident in 2005, she would have paid her taxes (which is true); and that here in these United States, we don't have to prove our innocence and we don't have to show the government our papers.
Now they have sent a tax bill for 2005. It's completely bogus, of course; neither of us was a resident of Multnomah County in 2005, not for even a single day, not in any way, shape or form, through presence, property ownership, or any other conceivable definition.
Over 50 people particpated in our weekly peace vigil on Wednesday.
As of yesterday, this has been the worst quarter for US soldiers since the illegal invasion began in 2003. The toll for the past three months -- 329 -- made it the deadliest quarter for U.S. troops in Iraq since the March 2003 invasion. That surpasses the 316 soldiers killed during November 2004 to January 2005. End the occupation and bring our soldiers, sailors and air force home now!

Wisconsin to China, and then back across the sea to Vancouver, Washington. That was the trajectory of my brand new Trek bicycle, which I bought recently at a bike shop here in Vancouver.
Trek is based in Wisconsin, and some of their bikes, such as the one I bought, are made in China. It wasn't until I got home with my new bike that I saw the big, prominently placed Made in China sticker. I had assumed Treks were made in the U.S. -- if not in idyllic Wisconsin, then somewhere else. This misconception influenced my decision to buy another Trek, (my last Trek, bought years ago, was stolen last year. I wrote about that, using an alias, here: http://portland.indymedia.org/en/2006/06/341690.shtml )
Representative Jim McDermott has broken ranks and has signed onto House Resolution 333, calling for impeachment of Cheney. Call to thank him for standing up for the Constitution: 1-800-614-2803.
Call your US Rep and ask if they are now willing to get on the right side of history and impeach this administration!
McDermott is the first US Representative from the North West to break from Pelosi and sign onto the Impeach Cheney bill, House Resolution 333.
As millions became refugees she explained how hard it was to be one. How the Iraq citizens have fled out into other countries. Of having to leave to find work and just to survive. "It is hard to be a refugee" she tells us. "Yes there is no killing, but there is no rights, no home, no schools, no medical, no dignity, no self worth. They are living in tents. For over 3 years now they have been living as refugees. With no rights at all. And with no resources, they have nothing. No one cares." She continues, "The government doesn't care! They don't investigate or care at all, they just ignore the refugees' situation. They are ignoring a population of over 4 million people, who are homeless and have nothing at all. And no one cares!"
