AUDIO FILE: Reportback on Human "Dam" Blockade at PacifiCorp
I arrived late and missed the theater with hazmats suits and fake blood, intending to draw attention to the poisonous conditions on the Klamath River. But, I did arrive in time to interview three of those who were there, including two of the blockaders.

Toughest Union Going Soft? 15.08.2007 13:21
Unprecedented Sell-Out by Ugles & Co. in ILWU Local 19, Seattle
Five months before organized West Coast longshore workers are set to begin bargaining for a new contract with the employers association, union officers in one ILWU local are already starting to give away some key historic gains of waterfront workers
Seattle, Aug. 15 ?In a stunning betrayal of the militant rank-and-file ideals upon which the ILWU was founded, Local 19's officers duped a tiny minority of the local's membership present at last Thursday's stop-work meeting into a sell-out of unparalleled proportions.
On August 9th, on behalf of the Port Labor Relations Committee, President Herald Ugles tabled a "Continuous Operation Document" between the local union and Stevedoring Services of America Terminals, which will eliminate unit breaks at Terminal 18 in the Port of Seattle. The motion to adopt the new work rules, in exchange for at most five more jobs on container operations?although the memorandum's language itself is so vague that even this slight gain in manning is not even for sure?was passed by a slim majority at the tiny and unrepresentative meeting.
The underhanded tactics used by the Ugles/Manwell/Ventoza regime to ensure the membership meeting would be tiny and then to blackmail those members who did show up into passing the give-back measure have been the subject of lively debate around the Seattle waterfront in the days since the August 9th meeting.

DeFazio To Host Impeachment Forums Wednesday In Eugene
Looks like Rep. DeFazio will be in Eugene/Springfield Wed. Aug 15 and hopefully will hear from at least some of his constituents that his recent vote to increase government surveillance powers was not what he was elected to do in Washington, D.C.

At three home district public forums, Congressman DeFazio will discuss his views on impeachment, the War, War Games and Emergency Martial Law plans, and other issues. Two venues are in Eugene, with a third in Springfield. Eugene citizens are also likely to suggest the congressman more forward on impeachment, cut off funding for the war, and put daylight on Bush "emergency" home front plans.

All constituent forums are free and open to all.

Eugene * Wed., Aug. 15 * 2:00 - 3:00 pm * Campbell Senior Center * 155 High Street
Eugene * Wed., Aug. 15 * 7:00-8:00 pm * EWEB Training Ctr/Community Rm * 500 E. 4th Avenue
Springfield * Wed., Aug. 15 * 5:30-6:30 pm * Springfield City Council Chambers * 225 5th Street

Report Back From Smash ICE Action
Yesterday, around 30 people showed up in front of the Federal Building in Tacoma. While we were there, about a dozen people were down at the detention facility being watched by private riot cops.

The response from the public was about 50/50. Some people had no idea there even was a detention facility in Tacoma. Others expressed sincere concern at what was happening and eagerly listened to what we had to say. We later moved to within the festival that was taking place and set up there. We stayed until all of our literature was gone and then left. The whole event lasted about 4 hours.

The ICE agent, writing from  dhs.ice@gmail.com (which you should write to whenever you have time) sent this email to our list. He is unfortunately right. ICE is not a part of the NSA but the DHS. Sorry about the confusion. Most of do in fact know this (as our pamphlets from yesterday prove). One of us did not. Here is his email:

Protesters Lockdown at PacifiCorp, Demanding Energy Justice
Energy Justice on the Klamath River NOW!! Protesters have locked down in front of the Pacific Power building at NE 9th and Multnomah to demand that the company shut down the four dams it operates on the Klamath river. At noon today three protesters blockaded the main entrance to PacifiCorp's headquarters (NE 7th and Multnomah). The protesters were joined by a rally of several dozen supporters, many of whom wore hazmat suits painted with fake blood to draw attention to the poisonous conditions on the Klamath River. The action was claimed by the Convergence for Climate Action, Stumptown Earth First! and Rising Tide. [Audio File of Lockdown]

The protest follows the "Convergence for Climate Action" which took place in Skamokawa, WA over the past week. Yesterday, protesters from the camp occupied the proposed Liquefied Natural Gas terminal at Bradwood, Oregon for several hours. A simultaneous occupation took place in Asheville, North Carolina on Monday where a Bank of America branch was shut down by protesters for its lead role in financing the coal industry. Police at the Asheville protest used a TASER to electrocute immobilized protesters using non-violent civil disobedience tactics, an unprecedented application of this device.

Today in London an affiliated Camp for Climate Action" begins just outside of Heathrow airport, where more two thousand participants plan to target airline industry giants profiteering amidst the climate crisis. The London gathering has garnered front page media attention across the UK, where more than 1800 police have been mobilized and anti-terrorism laws have been activated for the camp's surveillance

Staging the Portland Nuke
Captain Eric H. May, the Internet military intelligence writer, has written his most detailed article to date on the highly suspicious Portland Nuke exercise, Noble Resolve. He names the names of the key players in the operation, and of the military and media figures who have joined the growing outcry about what may turn out to be a false flag version of the White Houses much- predicted terror nuke.

Martial Law and Noble Resolve Noble Resolve 7-2 is a test of emergency management software. Same software was in place and tested during and after Hurricane Katrina. The test is being funded by Department of Homeland Security. PDF links below give information about effective resistance to martial law. The software company, Swan Island Networks, http://www.swanisland.net has close ties to NORTHCOM and NSA. Use search term "NORTHCOM" here at Portland Indymedia for extensive information about NORTHCOM and martial law http://portland.indymedia.org/en/2005/08/322932.shtml.

Noble Resolve may or may not become a "live" drill. The more it is publicized, the less likely we will have a 10 kiloton nuke detonated here. The threat of martial law remains regardless.

Lately I have seen many posts about a possible "false flag" (I just call it imperialism at work) attack involving Portland, OR. As an anarchist I have found the suggested response of calling and writing elected officials a waste of time. Don't beg for freedom. Fight for it!

Word has it that Homeland Security is going to be holding a terror drill in Portland in late August called Noble Resolve. This drill was going to be a nuclear strike scenario, but as of late has been changed to a volcano scenario. It sounds like the drill is going to cause national guard units, army, homeland security, and all the other folks we all have nightmares about to enter our town to practice for a martial law scenario.

There has been some talk here and elsewhere regarding Freightliner as a possible site of a live Noble Resolve. After seeing the DayAfterWorkshop Report posted today I decided to take a closer look at is in the area. These are the sites of interest I have found so far:

1. St. Johns Bridge - the most obvious landmark in the DAW Report map.

2. ExxonMobil Refining & Supply Company - just to the northwest of the bridge at 9420 NW St Helens Road Portland, OR 97231. (1)

3. Schnitzer Investment Corp. and Schnitzer Steel Industries - they own the property just south of the bridge at 6529 NW Front Avenue Portland, OR 97210 (2). Interestingly, the CEO of Schnitzer Steel is John D. Carter (3), who is the former Executive Vice President and Director of Bechtel Group, Inc., the former President of Bechtel Enterprises, Inc., and is currently the Director of FLIR Systems, Inc. (4), which is a thermal imaging/defense related company.

Lone Vet Report
Let me start with Congressman Blumenauer's words,

"Since the President announced his surge in January, we have spent $60 billion and lost 600 lives. In five years, we have invested half a trillion dollars in the Iraq war - $10 billion every month - and yet the situation is only growing worse.
Our ongoing war in Iraq has also created a refugee crisis that rivals the tragedy in Darfur. With 4 million Iraqis displaced from their homes, I am committed to working with my colleagues to help them find safety, bring our troops home and end this nightmare NOW. You can watch a statement I made on the war and my Iraqi refugee legislation."

I was amazed by these words because January was the month that the dems took control of the House of Representatives and they let all of this happen knowing that we wanted them to stop the madness. We thought that they would start impeachment hearings immediately and stop funding the war. They did nothing except talk with no walk.

Blumenauer Protest Grows, Forces Change in Anti-Impeachment Tactics
More than 40 protesters and a Eugene Vets For Peace "peace bus" made the fourth weekly "impeach the war criminals" vigil inside and outside of Oregon Rep. Earl Blumenauer's office a lively affair. Although police were called out once again, they did not follow through on their previous week's threats to arrest pro-impeachment demonstrators, preferring to sit in an adjoining park.
Several Pissed Off Grannies in rocking chairs and a diverse group of other pissed off people joined Vets for Peace Portland and Eugene for a rousing protest of Oregon Rep. Earl Blumenauer's continuing refusal to treat the rich white rulers of our country the same way he treats poor black and brown people.

After failing to diminish the numbers or the enthusiasm of the previous
vigils by intimidation and harassment with aggressive security personnel and police, the Blumenauer braintrust has apparently decided to change tactics and allow the protesters to exercise their civil rights.

Washington County Peace Vigil- Week 103
Washington Co Peace Vigil will be commemorating 2 years of standing for peace on Wed, Aug 15th.

I heard a common theme among the 54 participants at this week's vigil...an hour of therapy. Many of us feel better just being around like minds where we are free to express ourselves about the horrid situation we are in...without wondering what the other's leanings might be. We know! It is also interesting to note that while most of our paths would have never crossed had it not been for the Iraq War...they have crossed. And, many people have become true friends. Everyone is welcome each Wed at SW 5th and Hall in Beaverton (across from the library) from 6:30-7:30pm.

Update On Smash ICE Project
To Everyone Concerned,

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) branch of the National Security Agency continues to aggressively conduct raids against immigrant communities, both in the Pacific Northwest and nationwide. The detentions and deportations that come as a result effect more than just the families that are broken within the process, they are of concern to every person that knows feelings of compassion and empathy.

There is a network of groups forming in the region attempting to address the issue of immigrant rights (basic human rights) rapidly and thoroughly. If you or your organization would like to be contacted to help mobilize a response in the event of a raid, please send an email to  smashICE@gmail.com with your contact information. The informal group behind this project currently resides in the Puget Sound area. While each of us differ in our politics, we all agree that what ICE is doing, what the government is doing, and what the system is doing must stop immediately.

Report back on food co-op project for Monmouth-Independence
Several months ago people from Monmouth-Independence starting meeting to discuss what was important to building a strong, healthy, sustainable community. Food security was and is a huge issue. There is no grocery store in Monmouth, even though there is a University in the town. Before we could get started on a food co-op we had to address food security in our community we started a group to have deeper discussions about what our community needs. The group is called Monmouth-Independence Cafe Commons and here is more on our projects...

Olympia: Report Back From Anti-Police Rally And March

I wrote an article earlier regarding the arrest of two individuals in Olympia. After writing that article, another anarchist was arrested. This arrest bore many resemblances to the previous ones. Some, not all, have been given the impression that the police are targeting certain people, people whose names have been made public numerous times.

Beyond that, the Olympia Police Department routinely brutalizes and humiliates people on the street. Earlier this year, the OPD moved in force on Camp Quixote, a piece of unused land that had been squatted to immediately provide shelter and a community for those without one. The activities surrounding the ports in the northwest have consistently encountered police repression. The everyday lives of people the State has a grudge against are constantly worsened by the police. The police have been known to kill people. The police have been known to act on government orders and murder specific people. In response to this, an anti-police rally was held on the 4th Ave bridge this afternoon.

Another NEW Natural Gas Pipeline Proposed
Recently Released Palomar Gas Transmission Pipeline Map As Houston-based energy developers try to convince rural Oregon and Washington to accept LNG development, we are now learning that NW Natural and Transcanada are the real players in this ill-advised scheme. The companies announced their intention to build the Palomar Gas Transmission Project, which will extend from Madras through Molalla to Bradwood in the Lower Columbia River.

The project, being sold as a way to increase supply diversity for the Pacific NW, conspicuously provides access for proposed Columbia River LNG terminals to the California natural gas market. The project is too large for Oregon, and undoubtedly will facilitate Oregon becoming the "backdoor" for importing new, expensive, foreign fossil fuel supplies into California. The Palomar Project is a classic "bait and switch", where Oregonians are duped into permitting a project that ultimately results in a second pipeline crossing dozens of salmon-bearing streams, thousands of acres of private property through the threat of eminent domain, and small communities with little emergency response capacity. The pipeline conspicuously ends in Bradwood, the site of the fastest-moving LNG proposal in Oregon (competing with a proposal in Warrenton and Coos Bay).

Call Governor Ted Kulongoski today, and tell him that you OPPOSE LNG on the Columbia River, and that the State cannot meet its renewable energy goals while allowing its utilities to lock ratepayers into more expensive, excessive fossil fuel infrastructure. The Palomar Project and Columbia River LNG are both terrible projects for Oregon, and threaten to undermine the Governor's work towards reducing our reliance on foreign fossil fuels. Governor's Office: - Energy Advisor, Peter Cogswell

The upcoming Convergence For Climate Action appears to take on some of these issues. It's right across the river from where this pipeline would launch at Bradwood. It looks like people are getting together to oppose these projects. Check out  http://columbiarivervision.org and  http://climateconvergence.org/west.

Interfaith Peace Walk Towards a Nuclear Free Future
Peace Walkers Arrested at Nuclear Bomb Factory: Four participants in an 86-day walk from Dublin to London for a nuclear-free future have been arrested today at AWE (Atomic Weapons Establishment) Aldermaston in Berkshire. They were protesting against the ongoing expansion at the facility. The walkers were arrested just after lunchtime at the Aldermaston base, after a 10-mile walk beginning in Theale, on the outskirts of Reading. Upon reaching Tadley Gate, the walkers assembled for a vigil when some members of the party decided to sit down and link in front of the gate in order to block incoming and out-going construction traffic. It was a symbolic gesture of defiance against the might of the state and military-industrial complex. Officers from Thames Valley police and the MoD, acting as accomplices to the base's illegal preparations for nuclear war, swiftly prised the peacekeepers apart before handcuffing them and dragging them off to a waiting van.

One of the arrested, Daniel Viesnik, 32, from London, who has walked the full 825 miles from Dublin, says: "The UK government's decision to spend tens of billions of pounds of taxpayers' money upgrading the Trident system is illegal, immoral and will further destabilize global security." Today's action was carried out in solidarity with Block the Builders, who have been carrying out regular blockades at Aldermaston since last year, in opposition to the ongoing construction of the new multi-million pound Orion laser system at the site.

Related: For Hiroshima/Nagasaki, & Beyond: Call congress [800-270-0309] to reduce, not expand, USA's nuclear arsenal. Between today, the 6th, & thursday, the 9th, please call congress to insist that usa's nuclear arsenal be reduced, & not increased.

Democrats Kill Democracy: Ironic, Isn’t It?
A few weeks ago, I met with Representative Adam Smith (D-WA) to ask why he does not support impeachment. His view was that many Presidents violated the Constitution, so what was the big deal? Besides, he said, Bush and Cheney will be repudiated in the 2008 election.
At the time, I thought this was bizarre—no actually, I thought it was stupid. The 2008 election will not be about Bush and Cheney, I told him. He just rolled his eyes at my apparent naiveté.

I felt a deep sadness as I drove home but was unable to articulate it. It was something more than Smith's refusal to support impeachment. I had not gone into that meeting with an expectation that he would agree to live up to his oath of office. Maybe what made my heart hurt was the realization that I had become cynical?

Later that week brought another round of political realities. Give us money, begged former President and now multi-millionaire, Bill Clinton in a letter with the requisite fear-inducing photos of the evil-doers—Bush-Cheney-Rove. With the money, he assured me, the Democrats would really hold their "feet to the fire." The Democrat's plan? Ads. Yes, that's it. Every time Bush-Cheney-Rove abuse their power, the Democrats will buy an ad. That should fix those Republicans pandering to the right wing extremists!!
