COMMUNITY HISTORY 24.10.2007 14:21
Our Collective History at 7 corners and the red and black cafe
i may be accused of being nostalgic, but how can anyone not feel something as the red and black and other tenants are forced to move away from the 7 corners area, whose sense of place they helped to create? by sharing these thoughts i seek to strengthen my understanding, and stimulate discussion toward a bigger picture of our collective memory.

it's precisely because it is a common story of power, land ownership, the displacement of people and the disruption of the places they gather, that this story needs to be reflected upon. sure, the handwriting of gentrification was always on the wall at 7 corners, and the promises of a community minded landlord were accepted on a basis of minimal trust, but what a drag it is ultimately to be forced to move when it was your own action, creativity, and insight which helped to create the conditions for greedy landowners to exploit!

LNG: "Lease It To Us Or Lose It To Us" Public Hearing Monday
LNG Pipeline Route Clatsop County will hold a public hearing on [Monday] October 22. The hearing is at 10 AM and extends into the evening, and will be at Libery Theater in downtown Astoria. We are urging the County Commission to deny the NorthernStar application, which received a positive recommendation from the Planning Commission. We need the County Commission to overturn their absurd decision. If you're interested in going down from Portland, contact Columbia Riverkeeper's LNG organizer, Dan Serres, at 503-890-2441.

Remember: What is happening here in the Northwest is just a taste of what this industry is doing around the world. People in Russia, Nigeria, Peru, Indonesia and dozens of other nations are in the firing line of the LNG export industry. It's colonization on both ends.

The Governors of Oregon and Washington are silent on this issue and need a kick in the you-know-what to get them to protect the people of Oregon from these irresponsible energy schemes. This is yet another commitment to polluting, climate-changing, landscape-altering, foreign fossil fuel infrastructure. We can stop the LNG addiction before it starts. Tell the Governors that the Northwest neither needs nor wants LNG:

Anti-Capitalists Riot In Georgetown Against IMF/WB
georgetown rebellion 10/19/07 Anti-Capitalists gathered in Washington Circle and began an un-permitted march through Georgetown Friday night. Georgetown was chosen, because it represents "excessive wealth and privelege." This march was held in protest of the IMF/WB meetings being held in Washington DC.

Statement by some Georgetown March participants: "For a brief period, people in Georgetown, playing host to delegates from the IMF and World Bank, who force poverty on millions across the world, were hopefully forced to stop, if only for a second, and think about the suffering that they perpetrate, both abroad, and right here in Washington, DC, in their exclusive enclave. DC residents in working class communities of color are consistently denied access to public services, including health care, education, and the right to basic human dignity. Meanwhile, the desires of well-connected, largely white, wealthy residents of Georgetown are consistently prioritized over the needs of hundreds of thousands of low-income DC residents.

We appreciate that the fear generated by the Metropolitan Police Department forced many large, corporate, exclusive stores in Georgetown to close, but recognize that the World Bank and IMF continue to force poverty on millions around the world...Yet, no matter how successful we could have been in forcing Georgetown residents to think about the consequences of their actions on working class people in DC, Georgetown unquestionably still remained a far safer place than those places on which the IMF and World Bank force their policies of poverty, misery, and destruction."

O'odham Return from Gathering with Mexico's Indigenous and Subcomandante Marcos
When more than 500 Indian delegates gathered in Vicam Pueblo in Rio Yaqui, Mexico, at the Gathering of Indigenous Peoples of America, the power of a global spiritual force was present and released, said Ofelia Rivas, an O'odham woman living on the border of the United States and Mexico.

[From Narco News:] Today, O'odham ceremonial places are seen as tourist sightseeing places, from the great lava fields along the border to the Sea of Cortez in Mexico. "The ceremony sites and sacred places are under constant threat by archeologists, mining companies and Mexicans claiming O'odham lands and communities, such as a recent threat of a proposed chemical waste dump proposed location, just eight miles from our ceremony site."

With the agenda of assimilating O'odham, the United States placed O'odham children in boarding schools and relocated O'odham to cities. "The destruction of the social structures of the people is evident today; the people are dependent on the system to exist. Our language that was forbidden in boarding school is today surviving, but by a small degree." Now, the militarization at the border prevents O'odham from crossing on traditional routes.

In Mexico, ranchers, farmers and corporations are seizing O'odham lands. In 1845, there were 45 villages south of what is now the border. Today, there are nine surviving villages. "Today we continue to demand access to our lands, including access to our ancestral routes, to conduct our Him' dag and make offering to sacred places. We demand protection of our cultures and sacred places. We demand fair elections and our own representation in the government systems that ignore us."
"It is not a local movement, it is not just the Zapatistas. It is the Indigenous People of the world creating this movement"

Shut Down Downtown TACOMA! Against I.C.E! Against Raids! November 9th &10th
FLYER FOR SHUT DOWN! Shut Down Downtown Tacoma! We want to show the powers that be, that a homeland security detention center will not be tolerated in our communities and in our region. This will be in solidarity with the No Borders camp that will be happening the same week down south. We plan on sending a very visible, clear message by not allowing business as usual to happen on these days.

Tacoma W.A has the biggest Homeland Security Detention Center in the North West! They have been tearing apart families, separating children born here from their parents and loved ones that were not. Sixty-four people have died in these detention centers since 2004, and just recently about three hundred people were made ill from the food given in the Tacoma Detention Center. We want to show solidarity with those at the No Borders camp down south who will be resisting the wall, detentions, capitalism and the institutions as well as trade agreements that are responsible for displacing millions of people around the world. We have had enough of this in our communities! Enough of these secret raids! We want this facility OUT of Tacoma!

There will be a designated green zone at S. 17th and Pacific on the corner and in the grassy park across from the art museum. In this area only 100% LEGAL forms of protest will be taking place! Bring puppets, musical instruments, signs, banners, creativity and passion. The rest of down town will be open to diverse and creative tactics!

LT WATADA UPDATE - Just Released at 4 pm
earlier photo Lt. Ehren Watada at the Federal Courthouse in Tacoma between 11 am - 3 pm on Friday, Oct. 19. The Family and Friends of Lt. Watada are planning events for October 19 and October 27.

Supporters Prepare for Second Lt. Watada Court Martial: Lt. Watada's belief that the Iraq war is illegal and immoral has resonated with peace activists across the country and garnered national and international support. Lieutenant Watada was tried by a court martial this February for "missing movement" for failing to deploy and "conduct unbecoming an officer" for his statements opposing the war. After the prosecution had completed its case, the military judge, Lt. Col. John Head, intervened, declared a mistrial, and ordered Watada to be retried.

In a down to the wire decision, Federal Judge Benjamin Settle issued a last-minute stay temporarily blocking the second trial of Lt. Ehren Watada. On or after Friday, October 19th Judge Settle will decide Lt. Watada's constitutional claim that a second trial would amount to 'double jeopardy'. That decision will determine if a stay of court martial proceedings will be vacated or continue indefinitely. Lt. Watada seeks dismissal of all charges by the court and an honorable discharge from the Army.

Six Anti Poverty Committee organizers arrested in Coast Salish Territory.
On Saturday, October 13th, the Anti-Poverty Committee launched it's most recent housing offensive by attempting to squat one of the countless abandoned buildings in the Downtown Eastside of Coast Salish Territory (Vancouver). Six organizers from the APC were violently arrested in an abandoned building in the middle of the night.

The building was targeted to become an open squat and the 6 APC-ers where meant to prepare the building for the next days occupation. The police on the other hand meant to ensure a brutal end to the line of successful housing takeovers by effectively locking down the police state that is the Downtown Eastside.

But amongst the dozens of police trucks and dozens of riot cops, over 200 APC supporters showed up to militantly demonstrate there solidarity with those arrested. Not intimidate by the cops use of dogs or threats of tasers, APC and all others marched fist-in-fist reaffirming our commitment in assisting the transformation of our community resistance into revolution.

Indy Report from Inside the Press Tent at Topoff 4
My first day reporting on Topoff 4: Top Off 4 kicked off in Portland, Guam, and Phoenix on October 15th, 2007. This drill takes place alongside several other drills including both war games and martial law simulations. I assembled my camera gear.Upon hanging up the phone with Jack Blood, (a radio talk show host on Gcnlive.com) I heard the sound of jets overhead. Then I looked at the clock. 15 minutes til 9 AM, the official launch time of the "live" Topoff 4 drill.

At approximately 9:06AM a mock dirty bomb exploded at Portland International Raceway. However, the real area of concern is the Topoff 4 exercise was the east end of the Steel Bridge. P.I. R. was determined to be a better location to practice the response capabilities so the city center doesn't have to come to a halt. The media tent was located about 1,000 feet from the staged incident. You could see about 50 police, all in black, with helmets with faceguards. One was walking a K-9 as he stopped to chat with a friend dressed up in a bio-hazard suit. I saw about 40 or 50 of them. This took place to the backdrop of an entire fleet of ambulances, firetrucks, and Red Cross tents. Dozens of firefighters moved into action taking care of the victims. On the ground there appeared to be several non-moving bodies. In another area, you could see a bunch of bodies in some kind of protect quarantine zone.

I was present to witness the press conference that followed with FEMA. There were multiple agencies present, including the FBI and ATF.

Interview with local FBI about Hammerfest
Kicking Out the Nazis Audio interview from Friday October 5th with local office of FBI about Hammerfest, and about the FBI's double standards.

The Hammerskins, began life in 1987 as the Confederate Hammerskins. The group was founded in Dallas, TX gang specializing in violence against Jewish people and people of color, sexual minorities, as well as activists. The Hammerskin Nation--a masthead for Hammerskin racist skinhead crews--has since gone national, and later international, with their bigoted agenda.

The Hammerskin Nation event in Oregon was planned in conjunction with Volksfront, a Portland-led white supremacist group with links to Kenneth Mieske and Kyle Brewster, two of the killers of Ethiopian immigrant Mulugeta Seraw in a 1988 racially charged crime.

I spoke today with Mike Sweeney, with the Portland office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, about the Hammerskin nation:

Videos of Transform Columbus Day 2007
columbus day protest in denver This music video was filmed by a participant of the Transform Columbus Day march in Denver. The objective of the march was to establish group unity, and they were successful in stopping a racist Columbus parade three times. 83 people were arrested

In many cities, Columbus day parades have been shelved and replaced with fun and decent italian ethnic celebrations, such as in San Francisco. While Denver was the site of the first Columbus parade nationally, a period of years went by when no parade was held. The revived parade held during the past decade is conducted very inappropriately, and repeatedly uses grotesque imagery such as groups historically reenacting the color guard of the frontier cavalry unit which cleared tribes out of Colorado, and participants have shouted ugly slurs at children in the other march. Organizers of Transform Columbus Day have repeatedly stated their request that they just change the name of this march, and bring in other heroes, and the club organizing the parade seems to dig-in-their heels and make their Columbus celebration more intense.

EVENT: New Film About Venezuelan Revolution
'NO VOLVERAN', the most up to date documentary about the Venezuelan Revolution, will be playing on Saturday, Oct. 20th @ Liberty Hall at 7pm (311 N Ivy).

While giving a brief overview of recent events, the film's focus is the worker organizations that have successfully responded to the challenges of globalization and outsourcing, as well as other attacks on their living standards from profit-hungry corporations. Venezuela remains the most politically progressive country in the world, not because of Chavez, but because of the action of the people pushing the revolution forward. There are thus many lessons that US workers and activists could learn from this on-going process.

Come join us for a post-film discussion and learn how to become involved in Venezuelan solidarity work.

BLM Extends WOPR Comment Period to Dec. 10; Get Involved Locally
Cascadia Wildlands Project Due to public pressure, the Bureau of Land Management recently extended the public comment period for the Western Oregon Plan Revision (WOPR) to December 10, 2007. Please take a moment and submit a comment on this proposal that will open up old-growth and streamside reserves on western Oregon BLM lands to clearcutting and ramp up logging by three-fold in the region. More information about the WOPR can be found at link to www.oregonheritageforests.org.

On Wednesday, October 18, the Eugene BLM will be hosting a "technical briefing" on the WOPR. It is being held from 8:00 am- 4:30 pm at the Eugene BLM office, 2890 Chad Drive in Eugene. Details about the event can be found at  http://www.blm.gov/or/plans/wopr/oct-pub-meetings.php. This is a good opportunity to learn about any issues you have related to the WOPR.

Join the Cascadia Wildlands Project and Oregon Wild for a hike to a remnant old-growth forest outside of Cottage Grove now threatened by the WOPR. This forest is literally the backyard of many landowners in the area who are outraged by the BLM proposal. We will depart Eugene at 9:30 am on Saturday, October 20 from Kinko's back parking lot (13th and Willamette St.). Please RSVP for the hike

Eric McDavid Still Being Denied Vegan Food - Your Help Needed!
eric mcdavid It has been two weeks since the jury found Eric guilty, and we are still trying to regroup and get ready for the next round. While this is going to be a long process - one which will require your help and support in a variety of ways - there is one thing that simply cannot be put off. The jail is still denying Eric vegan food. After enduring a two-week hunger strike in March 2006, Eric was finally given vegan meals on April 24, 2006. This lasted for 15 full months. Then, without any warning or reasonable explanation, the jail cut off Eric's vegan meals one week before his trial began. Since that time, he has been surviving off the few options he can purchase from commissary (peanut butter, beans, chips... ) and the little food he can pull off of the meal trays they bring him (usually bread and fruit - sometimes oatmeal in the morning). Clearly, this is not enough to constitute a healthy, balanced diet. It is the jail's responsibility to provide Eric with the food he needs to remain healthy and strong. This is obviously something they are completely able to do, as they did so for 15 months with no problems.

Eric has been contemplating what courses of action are open to him in this matter, but unfortunately, his options have become even more limited. A hunger strike could be extremely risky due to the bout of pericarditis for which he was taken to the hospital in April. It is unclear whether his heart could handle the strain a hunger strike would put on his body - he could quickly end up back in the hospital, potentially with a VERY serious heart condition. In the meantime, Eric continues to lose weight, and his health will soon begin deteriorating. Please call the jail immediately and request that Eric be given vegan meals... again.

Eric's x-ref is: x-2972521.

Worker's Rights Rally Friday
Portland Immigrant Rights Coalition and Portland Jobs With Justice
Say NO to Unfair Social Security "No Match" Rules
NATIONAL DAY of ACTION This Friday, Oct.12.
Rally at the Federal Building
1220 SW 3rd Av., Portland
Friday, October 12, 11 am

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) rule punishing employers if they do not take action after receiving Social Security "no-match" letters is on trial. A temporary restraining order found that "if allowed to proceed, the mailing of no-match letters, accompanied by DHS's guidance letter, would result in irreparable harm to innocent workers and employers."

On Friday at 10 am, a delegation representing labor and immigrant rights will visit the Social Security Administration Office (1538 SW Yamhill) to urge support for abolishing the DHS rule. The Rally at 11 am will demonstrate broad based community opposition to this flawed and discriminatory ruling.

Oregon LNG: "Sell it to us, lease it to us or lose it to us"
Property taking by Government to the benefit of Private Industry?
Best wake up "Uplanders" it's headed your way!

Oregon LNG: "Sell it to us, lease it to us or lose it to us"...That was the choice Roger Thompson was faced with regarding his family's 132 year ownership of their property in Clatskanie and which just happend to be in the path of Spiro Vassilopoulos's(sp?) proposed "Port Westward LNG Transfer/Storage facility and ironically, in full support and abetted by "The Port of St. Helens".

Fate, Kharma, Destiny intervened in favor of the Thompsn's on that when PWLNG could not muster investors. Now, with Oregon LNG and its V.P., former employee of now defunct and broke Calpine Energy Group and ex-Enron Clone, Peter Hansen at the helm a bunch of property owners could quite possibly be besieged with likely the same choices and arm twisting, once again abetted by Government as well to the benefi of this one "Private Corporation" bent on selling Natural Gas to California?

California's Lt. Governor, in a recent speech and I'm paraphrasing, said "California doesn't need to worry about extensive LNG development and speculation because we will get all the, LNG derived, Natural Gas we need from Oregon".

Blackwater havoc, from Iraq to New Orleans to Portland??
Portland needs full assurance from local and State politicians that Blackwater, or another "security" contractor, is not scheduled to be in Portland during the Top Off / Vigilant Shield terror drill. That company is a destructive force the Neocons and Far Right are relying on to orchestrate the level of chaos that can thwart effective, practical response to repression, violence, and subterfuge.

Please read the article below, taken from today's antiwar.com front page, and think how screwed Portland would be if these lunatics just happened to have been hired for augmented security purposes, during the "largest-ever terrorism drill/exercise". Per reports from the drill press conference the other day, Michael Chertoff is supposed to be in town for the exercise in terror?! Given that he probably perceives US citizens to be the enemy, perhaps he'll have a Blackwater contingent for his security...
