PDX Está Presente: Resist Home Depot's prospecting in destruction of Patagonia's Rivers
Portland Represents: answering a call from International Rivers, requesting a stickering/photographing (Plus) campaign against Home Depot, which is prospecting on lumber from the "collateral damage" of Chile's destructive hydroelectric damming project.

The Chilean economic interests that promote damming Patagonia's Wild Rivers At Risk claim that dirty dams are the answer to Chile's climate change challenges. These dams would destroy forests and livelihoods, and the associated transmission lines would be the world's longest clearcut!

We are calling on The Home Depot to cancel contracts with the Matte Group (CMPC) and the Angelini Group (Arauco), and to stop being hypocritical about their promise to help customers be environmentally conscious consumers while defending the sales of products from interests that promote the flooding of native forests and the destruction of a delicate web of life.

Portland girl to live on wild food May 24-30
foraging Starting Sunday, May 24, I'll spend a week eating wild food that I forage from sidewalks, parks, wilderness areas and yards in the city of Portland, Oregon. There will be no dumpster diving or mooching off gardens. I will be eating wild edibles only. I will be blogging about my experience here at www.CultureChange.org, talking about what I eat, how I prepare it and how I feel. As a city girl accustomed to the comforts of restaurants and supermarket food, I am excited to experience a new kind of luxury: interacting with the Earth the way I was meant to.

Most of what I know comes from spending time with knowledgeable friends who are herbalists, survivalists, ethnobotanists and primitive skills enthusiasts. Some of them will be joining me this week and introducing me to foods I've never tried before. What we are doing is a bit like reinventing the wheel. Because we lost most of our ancestral knowledge when our forefathers destroyed indigenous cultures, modern-day foragers are tasked with salvaging what scraps of information we have left. It is essential that we work together as a community to assemble the pieces.

There is certainly some urgency, as we are living in the midst of the sixth greatest extinction event of all time. Resources are becoming ever scarcer as our population continues to climb. It makes sense to look "backwards" in order to progress as we work to build the infrastructure for a sustainable future. For 200,000 years humanity has lived on this planet, and the vast majority of the time we had no worries about pollution. It only got funky 200 years ago, when we entered the strange new age of industrialization, a world filled with machines and factory farms and chemicals.

NOAA: Sea Lion Advocates and Fishermen Find More Common Ground than Expected
grassroots support for sea lions growing! Two prominent Obama administration officials were in Oregon today to discuss salmon recovery. NOAA chief (and former OSU professor) Jane Lubchenco and White House Council on Environmental Quality chairwoman Nancy Sutley came to talk salmon, but pointedly did not allow participation from the public -- indeed, the doors were closed to almost everyone. Despite the incredibly short notice, dozens of people showed up with signs, banners, and lots of spirit.

I had actually expected to meet with some tension from the fishermen who had promised to be there. However, when I arrived and began talking to the other groups, I was pleasantly surprised and amazed at how articulate and well-informed this particular crowd was on this issue. Sea lion advocates and anglers immediately found common ground on numerous issues: All of us care about real salmon recovery; None of us believes killing sea lions is the answer; All of us want to see dams removed from the Snake river; All of us want to see habitat restoration. By the end, we were actually carrying each others' signs -- some of the fishermen carried signs supporting sea lions, and some of us carried their "science not politics" signs. Cascadia Summer Action Camp
Come learn to climb . . . We are inviting activists of all shades to our Action Camp May 23-25. This will be our kick-off event for Cascadia Summer, a season of action in defense of native forests left standing on Oregon's public lands.

At the camp we will be hosting trainings in a range of subjects such as tree climbing and rigging, anti-oppression, non-violent direct action, jail support and much more. We are facing thousands of acres of native forest clearcuts in Oregon this summer and training is the first step toward action. While the Green Scare has targeted our communities, we must make it clear that this culture will live on and even thrive regardless of state repression. We cordially invite you to help create and share the joyful, colorful, resistance culture that we hold so dear. It is our solemn obligation to keep the flame alive in dark times; so come to learn and stay to fight. This summer we will be dispatching a diversity of tactics from direct action to community education. We will have a camp in the forest and friendly houses in the city and we're inviting comrades young and less young, experienced and less experienced to join us for a summer, a month or just a few days. As long as the forests are threatened and we are able, every summer will be Cascadia Summer.

The action camp will be hosted 45 minutes outside of our campaign base of Eugene in the forests of Oregon. Visit www.forestdefensenow.org for more information or email forestdefensenow@gmail to arrange accommodations/rideshares ready for you when you arrive for the festivities.

At least two more sea lions put to death on the Columbia
sea lion We now know the identities of the animals put to death by the state. There were three of them rather than two. They are: C645, C674 and C858... C645 had a name, not just a brand. He was given the name Glider, by the children of Redland Elementary School. C674 was named "Hershey" by the community, in honor of Governor Kulongoski's dog. C858 had been added to the death list only last month, after being observed eating only TWO fish. Clearly, they are not targeting "problem" animals, as they had initially claimed. They are targeting and killing any sea lion they can get.

Once again, we are asking for volunteers to step forward who would like to assist with monitoring. It seems that the killing has not ended for the year after all. We particularly need people to be watching the river at Bonneville dam, and down in Astoria at the sea lion haul out. If you would be interested in helping with this, please contact the Sea Lion Defense Brigade at info@sealiondefensebrigade.org. You can also call Matt Rossell at In Defense of Animals to volunteer as a monitor. That number is (503)249-9996.

Portland Indymedia Radio DJ Harassed & Threatened With Grand Jury Subpoena
Activists should be aware that a Portland Indymedia radio DJ, Sean Rice, has been harassed recently by the FBI and threatened with federal grand jury subpoena.
On Monday a man approached Sean Rice when Sean left his house to catch a bus. The man addressed him by his legal name claiming to be an FBI agent and wanting to "ask some questions". Sean quickly informed the man that he wouldn't be answering any questions. The man then claimed he "just wanted to talk to him about his rights". Mr. Rice then told the man he would not talk to him and walked away. At no time did the man present any identification proving whether he was a fed or not. It is important to be aware that corporations hire private detectives to harass activists. So this man may or may not be who he says he is.

Wednesday leaving work the same man approached, this time with a woman who did the talking. She started by trying to hail him over, "come here, come here". To which he replied, "No, talk to my lawyer". She then threatened him, "You're only making this harder on yourself. We can do this the easy way or with a grand jury subpoena." He requested her card to give to his lawyer and offered to have his lawyer contact her. She asked who his lawyer was and he, again, asked for her card. "No. Who's your lawyer?" "Stu Sugarman." Apparently Stu's bad ass reputation preceded him and she quickly uttered a nervous, "Ok," and they left;, again without identifying themselves or serving actual subpoena papers.

So just what exactly is a grand jury?

Foreclosure Prevention Action at Multnomah County Courthouse
A motley crew of 35-40 pissed-off Portlanders disrupted the auction of foreclosed homes by bank-fraudsters yesterday morning at the Multnomah County Courthouse before being removed by Sheriff's deputies from the lobby of the courthouse, some violently. Attendees shouted slogans and made "bids" on properties (e.g., "I bid that you keep people in their homes").
The law-unenforcers outrageously claimed that the courthouse lobby and steps were not "public space", and that they therefore were entitled to grab and shove members of the group away from the building. One deputy said, "I'm the judge" of what's public space.
The banking industry has been obstructing attempts by activists to require pre-foreclosure mediation between themselves and homeowners because such mediation has been shown to keep people in their homes rather than out on the streets, where "unnecessary" people should apparently be.

LEONARD PELTIER: Show Your Support on May 20 at 7 pm
Leonard Peltier, Waiting for Freedom An educational forum focused on the ongoing case of incarcerated American Indian activist Leonard Peltier will be held May 20, 2009, at 7 pm, at the Native American Student and Community Center at Portland State University.
Recently, Peltier was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for a sixth consecutive year, in honor of his remarkable success in furthering causes of peace and human rights from behind bars during his 33 years of incarceration.
On the campaign trail last fall, President Obama met with Native American leaders and indicated his willingness to consider clemency or to support parole for Peltier. The May 20th event is part of a nationwide effort to renew support for Peltier's release now that Obama is in office.

Fight the Banks: Foreclosure Prevention Direct actions
DIRECT ACTION GETS THE GOODS: Monday, May 11, at 9 a.m., at the Multnomah County Courthouse, 1021 SW 4th Ave. Stop the auction of foreclosed homes by the bank-fraudsters. Support SB 628.
Not active in supporting your neighbors who are facing homelessness because you think Obama will magically make everything all right?

Give up that Ghost....We need grass-roots action NOW, and YOU need to make it happen.... Every Monday morning, foreclosed homes are being auctioned at the Multnomah County Courthouse (1021 SW 4th Ave.). This is being done in spite of the fact that the bankers and their political flunkies are obstructing attempts to require mortgage mediation with the victims of the financial scams that threaten to harm all working class people. (Contact your state representatives about support for SB 628, the pre-foreclosure mandatory mediation bill that the bank fraudsters are attempting to destroy, and see: link to blog.affil.org).

Wear red and bring signs, if you can.

PORTLAND TRANSIT RIDERS UNION--Fully fund public transit! No Cuts to TriMet!
Fight Tri-Met Cuts! Public transportation is a human right!

We are a group of Tri-Met riders and community activists which was initiated by the Portland Social Forum. In these times of economic disparity, when ridership is up, we believe that cutting services, hiking fares, and possibly even laying off public transportation employees is counter to building a sustainable city. Inspired by the Los Angeles Bus Riders Union, we work to build a long-term program for community involvement and participation in the decisions that affect millions of riders, and like the Bus Riders Union we believe public transportation is a human right. We reject any attempts to cut services or hike fares and strive to work with Tri-Met to build a truly democratic and sustainable city. For questions, comments or contributions please contact us.
