The Square rang with the chants: "the people want Mubarek out," "brick by brick, wall by wall, we will see Mubarek fall;" "Hey Mubarek you will see, Egypt wants Democracy;""No more Pharoah;"and various other chants in another language, Egyptian Arabic.

Several people who were carrying signs saying, "ask me about Egypt," were kept busy with interviews by the numerous media on hand.

Egypt Solidarity Protest in PDX
I went to the Egypt solidarity rally in Portland today. It was a decent turnout. Chants were "Brick by Brick, Wall by Wall, We will make Mubarak Fall" and many more chants. Children were dancing waving the Egypt's flag as everyone chanted. There was a lot of energy coming from the organizers of this rally. It was wonderful to see a large group of people from all different backgrounds taking part in today's rally. I hope more will continue until Mubarak steps down.

Also, just to clear this up as there has been confusion that President Hosni Mubarak stepped down. This is not true. The top leadership body of Egypt's ruling party, including Mubarak's son Gamal Mubarak, has resigned today. But not President Hosni Mubarak.

Video: Single Payer Health Care Conference
Three video clips from the recent Single Payer Health Care Conference held in Portland Oregon.
Dr. Margaret Flowers Interview
Representative John Conyers Keynote Presentation
Labor Session at the Single Payer Health Care Conference

Dr. Margaet Flowers is the Congressional Fellow for Physicians for a National Health Program
Interview conducted by Lisa Stiller.

From Bill Moyers Journal
"While many in Congress, the press and the public have given up on the idea of even a limited public option in health care reform, Flowers and her group, Physicians for a National Health Program, are standing firm for a single-payer plan. Specifically, they want to extend the Medicare program, which they see as a functioning single-player plan, to the nation as a whole.
Flowers has testified before Congress and penned Op-Eds and she has been arrested three times in her attempts to get Congress and the White House to pay attention to single-payer."

Dr. Margaret Flowers Interview

Rep. John Conyers has been the Representative from Michigan since 1965.
From Wikileaks:
"He is currently the second-longest serving incumbent member of the House (just after fellow Democrat from Michigan, John Dingell) and the third-longest incumbent member of the entire Congress by length of service (after Dingell and Daniel Inouye). The district includes most of northwestern Detroit, as well as Highland Park, Hamtramck and part of Dearborn."

Representative John Conyers Keynote Presentation

The Labor Session featured two speakers: Tom Leedham, Principal Officer, Teamsters Local 206 in Oregon; and Mark Dudzic, National Coordinator, National Campaign for Single Payer.
This was an excellent workshop on the relationship between Labor and Health Care.

I defeated a collector
The collector threatening your paycheck may not actually own the debt; and you can fight back
You can beat the Man, and keep your money. And you should, because destroying bottom-feeder capitalism benefits everyone.

Here is information that will help you to decide whether to take on a bottom-feeder in court. I did, and the case was called: Equable Ascent Financial, LLC vs. Theresa Mitchell Multnomah County Court Case no. 100404905. The outcome of this case was plaintiff-requested dismissal, or in other words, they gave up!

Like a lot of lapsed debtors, I feared I might not qualify under the new bankruptcy laws, and I knew I didn't have money up front for a bankruptcy lawyer. [...]

In Oregon the amount under $10,000 automatically goes to arbitration unless either party objects in writing. So I objected, but my objection mysteriously was delayed by Clerk office. I really had to wonder. Use certified/notarized mail for all Clerk transactions in Multnomah County. There was a $500 fee for arbitration but I applied for waiver/deferral.

As soon as I filed all fees and papers, I received notice of dismissal from the Arbitration atty ---within 2 hours; and I have to ask, how was that done so quickly, unless the Arbitration attorney is in constant contact, and perhaps cahoots with the collector? But this is the bottom line: I won, and you can win, and you should fight the bottom feeders, because--I cannot emphasize this enough--THEY HAVE NO RIGHT TO YOUR MONEY!!

new bankruptcy laws:  http://www.nolo.com/legal-encyclopedia/article-30040.html The old credit compact worked out profitably for the big banks this way: You were offered unsecured loans with your credit cards, the bank backed the purchases via fractional reserve banking, which is to say they essentially created the money from nothing, and you paid the money back . Should you fail to pay, credit agencies were notified, and you suffered a loss of credit rating if you defaulted.

Recent Video interview with Bark on this subject

These 27 remote and beautiful campgrounds represent the last remaining publicly managed campgrounds in Mt. Hood National Forest. Babgy Hot Springs is the only free hot spring in the area and is one of our regions' gems. Under this proposal, for-profit companies will be invited to submit bids to manage and profit from our favorite places to relax.

Comments to the Forest Service will be accepted until midnight on February 14th.

No Korea FTA lecture and slideshow Portland Event. Kim Kyung-Ran, is director of external relations for the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions

[Video]  link to www.archive.org

The following text I copied from the event flier:

In early December, U.S. and Korean trade negotiators struck a deal that is expected to bring the Korea Free Trade Agreement to the floor of Congress in early 2011. This is the biggest free trade agreement since NAFTA, and is strongly opposed by the largest labor federations in each country.

Hear Kim Kyung-Ran, director of external relations for the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, as she:
Inspires us to action with photos and stories from some of South Korea's largest and most dramatic mobilizations against the FTA to date.

Kim busts the myth that job-killing trade deals that hurt ordinary Americans some how benefit working people in other countries.

Kyung-Ran's stunning 35-minute slide presentation will be followed by short reports from local activists, updating you on the expected impact of the FTA in our region and how you can get involved in local efforts to stop it.

Portland's Red & Black Cafe poised to BUY building, help develop affordable housing
Workers at the Red & Black Cafe are teaming up with a newly forming low-income housing non-profit to own the cafe's current building at 400 SE 12th St in Portland. A fundraising drive was launched at the beginning of this month to raise the $50 thousand dollar down payment. Loans and donations to the project bring the current total raised to over $43,000! We have until the end of January to raise the money to make this project successful. The plan for the building is that the main floor will remain the Red & Black Cafe. The upstairs, which is currently offices, will become income restricted affordable housing.

With ownership comes the security of knowing that space costs can't be pushed out of reach by a future landlord. This is especially reassuring news for the Red & Black Cafe which faced this very issue when it was forced from its original location. This is also important due to the Red & Black's controversial reputation — owning the building ensures that there will be no future landlord who is tempted to not renew the lease.

Blow Pony April 2009 Gay Bashing Case Botched By DA Office Incompetence/Negligence
The verdict for the trial of a gay bashing on Wed was a huge disappointment in a long line of disappointments. City officials have been telling the queer community that if we want something done about gay bashings we must report. This case, in particular was brought up in a press conference with the mayor. Airick Heater (the victim & well known local DJ for Blow Pony) was encouraged to prosecute. This trial was to showcase the effectiveness of reporting hate crimes in Portland. I think you'll have a clear opinion on that after reading what happened.

Portland in the spotlight
Contrived Christmas Tree Terror Plot to Stampede Portland into Accepting FBI Takeover

*Alex Jones* Prison Planet / Infowars.com Kurt Nimmo
January 17, 2011

Residents of Portland, Oregon, recently attended a forum on the question of whether the city should rejoin the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force. The city withdrew its task force membership five years ago after the Justice Department turned down a city request for oversight over the JTTF. The decision followed revelations in 2002 that the FBI and the Portland Police kept thousands of "red squad" style police files on political activists. Since 1981, Oregon law has barred police surveillance of political groups in the absence of criminal activity.

"Both the FBI and the Portland Police Bureau have a 70-year history of carrying out surveillance on thousands of innocent individuals and organizations because of their political, religious or social activities - or because of their race or national origin - rather than because there was evidence of criminal activity," PortlandInsight reported prior to the forum.

In November, Portland was in the news when Mohamed Osman Mohamud was arrested for allegedly plotting to blow up a Christmas tree in Portland's Pioneer Courthouse Square. It soon was revealed that the FBI had provided a fake bomb, van, and cell phone (to be used as a detonator) in the incident. Stephen Sady, assistant federal public defender, said the arrest of the 19-year-old native of Somalia "was obviously timed for maximum impact and maximum publicity." Sady said the FBI had groomed the defendant and there was "potential for entrapment." It can now be said it was also used to stampede Portland into accepting the presence of the FBI and its Joint Terrorism Task Force.

The FBI is notorious for recruiting clueless patsies in bogus terrorism cases. Over the last few years, dozens of such cases have provided the government with a diet of propaganda fodder in the fake war on manufactured terror. We Are Change Portland mentioned the first World Trade Center bombing during the forum with city officials and the FBI (see video below).

The Forgotten Jobless and Our Future
In the political theater exhibited last December where 13 months of unemployment extensions were linked to continuing tax breaks for the rich, a significant issue was left out of the drama, though it directly impacts the lives of millions. That is the fate of those who have become known as the 99ers.

The 99ers are those who have not been able to find a job, though they have exhausted all their employment benefits. The number of people applying for unemployment benefits peaked from November 2008 to May 2009. Ninety-nine weeks later those still unemployed had exhausted their benefits and disappeared from the official unemployment statistics. They no longer have a social safety net to land in and crawl out of.

Their numbers and continuing growth are staggering, and their desperate situation effects all working class Americans -- employed and unemployed. The fact that their fate was left unaddressed last December, while the economic top one percent were allowed hundreds of billions of dollars in tax breaks, says a lot about the political priorities of those who set policy in this country and whose voices they listen to.

Long-term joblessness has been an especially pronounced problem in the Great Recession. Those out of work for longer than six months make up 45.9 percent of all those unemployed. Those out of work for over a year make up 23 percent. This situation is not improving. For every job there are still a minimum of five workers competing to get it. According to the Federal Reserve's extended forecast, the unemployment rate in 2011 will not go below nine percent, and in 2012 it will remain at eight percent or higher.

This bleak outlook is all the more difficult for the 99ers since employers frequently use a long period of unemployment as a reason not to hire workers.

It has been estimated that there are over two million 99ers. By the end of 2011, this number is expected to increase by four million, with the peak month for unemployment benefit cutoffs occurring in April.

As in the 1930s, today we must organize in a way that creates unity between the employed and unemployed. To start, we can organize the largest possible union-led demonstrations to realize this unity in the streets. Educating and agitating on demands for economic relief for the 99ers and a jobs-creation program funded by raising Wall Street's taxes, would help to rally the numbers to make an impact. We must not be distracted by those who wish to dilute these demands by arguing that they are impossible, given the current political climate. It is that political climate that must be changed and this will not happen unless workers unite around their own needs and aspirations. The history of the 1930s demonstrates that when workers join into a movement representing their own interests, what is considered impossible can be made possible.

No to the Korean Free Trade Agreement

From the Oregon Fair Trade Campaign Website

"President Obama recently announced plans to push ahead with the Korea Free Trade Agreement in early 2011. This Bush-negotiated pact is the biggest free trade agreement since NAFTA itself. If passed, it will accelerate the offshoring of Oregon jobs, expose the state's environmental laws to new types of attacks and prohibit the type of banking regulations needed to head off the next financial crisis."

The Demonstration took place and the offices of Sen. Ron Wyden, who chairs the Senate's Trade Subcommittee. The gathering then marched the few blocks to the offices of Oregon Rep. Earl Blumeauer. Video is from the action at the Wyden offices.

VIDEO: FBI Terrorism Task Force JTTF joining Portland Police - A Town Hall Forum 1.13.11
The City Council held a Town Hall on the topic of the JTTF and the Portland Police[.] This was attend by a good couple hundred people and lasted for a couple hours[.] It was an open forum for the public to voice their opinion[.]

There was no debate nor any decisions made

The JTTF stands for Joint Terrorism Task Force.

The Joint Terrorism Task Force formed in 1997 and is one of 106 across the country. The Portland Police Bureau are no longer part of the JTTF.

But the Oregon State Police, Port of Portland and the Washington County Sheriff's Office participate with federal agencies for investigations.

Most people at this forum / event in my opinion tended to be very skeptical of the FBI and wanted no part in the "becoming partners" with the city or our police, in this type of partnership. There were a few questions raised as to why this merger was necessary.

There was a point in the meeting where 'break-away' groups formed to discuss concerns in a smaller group setting.
The break-away groups lasted for about 30 - 40 minutes and was not recorded in the video.

Eric McDavid - 5 Years Imprisonment
Dear friends, Yesterday marked the 5th year of Eric's arrest and imprisonment. Every year, at this time, we are forced to reflect on all that has happened. It is never an easy process, but this year feels different. This year we know that Eric will be in prison for the duration of his sentence. All of his appeals have been exhausted. 5 years is a long time - but we aren't even halfway there...

We have watched in horror these last few years as more and more of these kinds of cases have appeared across the country. It is hard not to think of this as a time of mourning. So maybe instead of a day of mourning, today can be a day of defiance. Today can be a celebration of thought crime. Won't you celebrate with us?

Please remember that other folks are sitting in prison for very similar reasons as Eric! They deserve your support. Marie Mason and Sadie (Joyanna Zacher) both have birthdays this month. Please consider sending them a note of support. Finally, we recently set up a wishlist on Microcosm for Eric. If you would like to send him something, please visit: microcosmpublishing.com

Stop 5000 Acre Public Lands Give Away
Sold CSF Land in McKenzie R. to Giustina Inc. ( BOF Member. Exp. 2010) Governor Kitzhaber and Secretary of State Kate Brown will decide at a February 8th 2011 State Land Board Meeting on whether to move forward on auctioning off 4,920 acres of Common School Fund (CSF) Land in Josephine and Jackson counties. Most of these parcels if sold would likely be bought by local timber industry interests and subsequently clearcut. In 2010 this has been the case for sales and exchanges of CSF lands in western Oregon.

All of these parcels still contain some mature and/or old growth forests although DSL staff is attempting to deny it. In Lane County 300-500 year old trees have been clear-cut from these "sold" public lands that were acquired by a former Oregon Board of Forestry member. The Oregon BOF makes recommendations and approves the disposal of the CSF lands. This current round of "disposal" sales of State public land has already occurred throughout most western Oregon counties.

We are urging folks who want to stop this public land from being sold off to local timber interests, clear-cut, and poisoned to write Governor Kitzhaber and Secretary of State Kate Brown who will decide the fate of these lands on February 8th 2011. Urge them to implement a moratorium on further Common School Fund land sales, initiate an independent investigation of whether laws were followed in earlier sales, if the "disposal" moves forward that the Forest Service and BLM be given priority in the acquisition of these lands, and demand the Governor mandate the adoption Code of Ethics rules for the Oregon Board of Forestry (BOF) to eliminate this sort of corruption. Together we can stop this corrupt travesty from moving forward and happening again.
