Portland Co-op Shop Needs Members
Calling all local artists! New cooperative needs members.
(PACT) In early 2013 a small group of people got together with one goal in mind: Open up a local, handmade cooperative shop in Portland, Oregon. In just a few short months we have elected a board, found a location in the Hollywood District, (right across the street from the Hollywood Theater), and our member-artists have grown from 2 to over 30. This is where you come in.

We need at least 40 artists in order to sign our lease. Membership dues range from 45 dollars and 3 shifts in the shop per month to 100 a month and no hours in the shop.

Calling all jewelry makers, book binders, doll creators, wood carvers, print-makers, screen-printers, clock-makers, and everything in between. If you think you may be interested, please contact us as soon as you can. We are having a jury meeting this Friday, the 1st but we could arrange to meet with you whenever you are available.

Alien Boy: the Life and Death of James Chasse
The documentary film Alien Boy: the Life and Death of James Chasse explores James Chasse's life and the police actions and decisions that led to his death. What emerges is an intimate and complex story of one man's life, the Chasse family's struggle for justice, and a city and a system grappling with accountability.

On Sept. 17, 2006 James Chasse was stopped by three law enforcement officers on a busy streetcorner in Portland, Oregon. A dozen witnesses watched in horror as officers tackled, beat, kicked, and tasered James until he lay motionless on the pavement with 16 broken ribs and a punctured lung. He died in the custody of Portland police about two hours later.

James had not committed a crime, so why did the officers attack him? Who was James Chasse? Officers told eyewitnesses he was a drug dealer, a homeless person, a non-person, a ghost. But that wasn't true at all. James was a writer, an illustrator, and a musician; he had a home and a family and friends who loved him. He was a small, shy, gentle person who had been living with schizophrenia for most of his life.

Alien Boy: The Life and Death of James Chasse examines his childhood, his intense involvement in the early Portland punk music scene, the heart-breaking teenage onset of his schizophrenia, and his brave efforts to avoid institutionalization and maintain his independence. [...]

Alien Boy: the Life and Death of James Chasse plays at Cinema 21, February 24-28.

Why Organized Labor Must Stand Against the Keystone XL Pipeline
Spurred by real urgency over the corporate driven ruin of the environment, a growing social movement is taking shape that will be on display this Sunday, February 17, when tens of thousands descend on the streets of Washington, D.C. in a show of power titled "Forward On Climate."
What is the target galvanizing these forces? The proposed Keystone XL Pipeline, to be built by TransCanada, which would carry crude oil extracted from the tar sands in Alberta, Canada, some 2,000 miles south to the Gulf of Mexico for export.

What is the outcome hoped for by those who will attend? That President Obama reject the project, finally and definitively, when it comes up for his approval this winter.

Protests, blockades, arrests and disruptions of the pipeline's construction have been ongoing by activists and landowners in East Texas since last summer. Now, the "Forward On Climate" rally marks a huge step forward to enlarge the movement. This is not your typical environmental protest in defense of a limited ecosystem.

Rather, the potential consequences of the XL Pipeline's operations are global and catastrophic because of climate change. And that's why organized labor needs to stand up now in an alliance that has the power to defeat it.

The future of Youth Pass is in jeopardy! Right now there is a $25 million deficit in the City's budget. This means that a lot of programs are in jeopardy, specifically the Youth Bus Pass. If we don't have Youth Pass, many families will be left with the burden of trying to scrape up money for kids to get to school. [...]

If Youth Pass is cut, many of Portland's youth will not be able to get to school and/or jobs.

Youth Pass is important because transit connects students to education, jobs, housing, healthy food options, social services and recreation. Youth Pass means that, regardless of where you live, the color of your skin, or how much money your family has, you have the freedom of mobility and opportunity.

Affidavit indicates FBI targeted anarchists for being anarchists
The newest document released in the Pacific Northwest Grand Jury case reveals the federal government's criminalization of anarchists. On January 30, a redacted affidavit was unsealed by order of Judge Richard Jones. The affidavit can be found at: http://nopoliticalrepression.files.wordpress.com/2013/02/redacted-warrant.pdf

Throughout the document Geoffrey Maron, an FBI Special Agent assigned to the Joint Terrorism Task Force, repeatedly refers to individuals under investigation as being "known anarchists," as if the ideology alone is evidence of a crime. Maron admits that "many anarchists are law-abiding," but continuously points to the "Oregon Conspirators" as being known as part of the anarchist community. Similarly, Maron notes that some of the Portland police had seen many of those individuals at squats in Portland — as if that had any relevance to the investigation other than that it might corroborate that the targeted individuals are, in fact, anarchists. [...]

Furthermore, according to Maron's statement, law enforcement used information gleaned from electronic records to identify "associates and conspirators" of the anarchists under investigation. By referring to "associates" (in addition to "conspirators"), Maron as much as admits that the FBI is casting its net over the entire anarchist movement, not narrowly investigating specific illegal acts.

UPDATE: POSTED TO PIMC ON 3/1/13: Good News reported: Two released for refusing to cooperate in a federal grand jury:

Fluoride Kills
fluoride the corrosive chemical hydrfluorosilicic acid spills and eats away concrete --Healthy Kid coalition claims this corrosive chemical if added to our pristine Portland water supply will prevent cavities --Not-- It appears this hydrofluorosilicic acid will eat the enamel right off your children's teeth [...]

Fluoride will erode the enamel off the teeth. High doses of fluoride will cause severe pitting and discoloration of the teeth. Systemic ingestion of fluoride because there is NO way to control the dose once fluoride (hydrofluorosilicic acid) is added into the water system leads to more people suffering from the symptoms of fluorosis.
It is the bright minds that brought us the mercury amalgams and those whom even once endorsed smoking as safe the AMA and ADA are endorsing fluoride like this (hydrofluorosilicic acid )is all the rage. Only drink too much of this fluoride kiddies and the ADA says this product will rob us all of our pearly whites, and weaken our bones. Fluoride is dangerous. It is even says so on the back of the tooth paste tube— poison --spit do not swallow—Adding fluoride (hydrofluorosilicic acid) to the public water system and claiming it is safe to drink, bathe, cook , and grow your vegetables in is asking our children and our animals to ingest high amounts of this acid. Acidity n high levels in our bodies' causes' cancer. Hello not to mention forcing huge populations of our children and their parent's pocketbooks to a life of cosmetic dentistry servitude or chemo therapy. Of course only if the child is lucky enough to have parents with money/ insurance who will be able to correct the cosmetic negative affects of fluoride. Everyone else will be destined to go through life with a cosmetically damaged smile, lower IQ and bone loss.

Bust the bus drivers!
Look for more "let's you and him fight" from Trimet. Why play along?
Trimet is a top-heavy bureaucracy with some expensive habits. It has 161 managers, believe it or not. Yep, lil' ol Trimet. Fifty-five of those managers get over $100K. Many of them get a lot more--like a quarter million per year.

Bus service has been cut back to pay for this army of overseers, and to fund $9 million in remodeling and new furniture. The top three floors of the Center Garage building, at 4012 SE 17th, stand empty. Apparently they were not good enough for the managerial class. Meanwhile the new buses are getting a cosmetic retrofit to look like Max trains; that will cost $2 million.

For the last several years, we bus drivers have been told we want too much. We have agreed to freeze our wages for many years now, on the proviso that our retirees continue to get the health benefits we fought for. We are concerned about their health; bus driving will kill from stress. I can't count the number of times I've heard that So-and-So retired, only to die within months. [...]

I'm grateful to have a good job, grateful to the public for supporting us, and looking forward to seeing my passengers on my next shift. In this, I am like most drivers. Some of us are grouches, and I'm sorry about that. But I have a suggestion for the public: Next time you're asked to bust the bus drivers, or for that matter any worker, ask yourself: Am I helping the ruling class in a race to the bottom?

The Black Panther Party’s Living Legacy --Touring Oakland and Berkeley w/ Billy X Jennings
View the embedded links and video here:

The Black Panther Party's Living Legacy --Touring Oakland and Berkeley with Billy X Jennings (Part One) By Angola 3 News

This month, over twenty students enrolled in the "Dismantling Racism" class offered by St. Catherine University in Minnesota traveled to the San Francisco Bay Area. The class focused primarily on California's prisons and what anti-prison activists are doing to challenge the human rights violations and racism endemic to California's infamous prison system.

Last week, the class was taken around on a Black Panther History Tour in Oakland and Berkeley, led by Billy X Jennings from It's AboutTime BPP Alumni & Legacy. Along with ongoing BPP history exhibits at the Alameda County Law Library in downtown Oakland and the window of Rasputin Music on Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley is a new photo exhibit running until February 28, entitled Louder Than Words, at La Peña Cultural Center (3105 Shattuck Avenue, Berkeley). An important friend and ally of the International Coalition to Free the Angola 3, Billy X Jennings' work was previously spotlighted in an interview with Angola 3 News, entitled We Called Ourselves the Childrenof Malcolm. [...]

The BPP's early critique of capitalism, of police brutality, of racism/exclusion in the criminal injustice system is foundational for all those of us who continue to challenge what we now call the "prison industrial complex". They were true visionaries whose call for a rainbow coalition, intersectionality and community empowerment continues to guide our work. What We Want/What We Believe - including "land, bread, housing, education, clothing, justice and peace" - has not changed at all.

(Stay tuned for part two, touring Berkeley and downtown Oakland!)

Fear Conquers All: My Afternoon with Oregonians for Immigration Reform
Rusty Fleming: Our Only Hope. Gary "Rusty" Fleming was a no-show at the Salem Public Library on Saturday January 26th, but in spite of this over 75 people turned out for the OFIR-hosted screening of his film "Drug Wars: Silver or Lead." The film is a bloody romp through the lawless world that is the US and Mexico border. The movie was written and produced by Gary "Rusty" Fleming, filmmaker and volunteer public information officer in Hudspeth County, Texas.

Oregonians for Immigration Reform are an interesting bunch of folks. Their members actively write to local publications, chastising journalists for not referring to undocumented people as "illegal-immigrants" and calling for the implementation of the highly unreliable E-verify system. Last month the Federation for Immigration Reform (FAIR) released a publication entitled "The Fiscal Burden of Illegal-Aliens on Oregonians," which OFIR proudly makes references to in their endless stream of guest opinion columns and letters to the editor. The report is lousy with exaggerated numbers and fully acknowledges that it has no data on the immigration status of foreign-born students, but claims that 75% of the US-born children of undocumented immigrants will need Limited English Proficiency instruction. OFIR hasn't shut up about this report since it came out and it didn't take long to learn something about this group: they're ticked off, they're vocal, and they're scared to hell of pretty much everything. This event was no exception to the rule, and OFIR had been hyping it since December with urgency and panic in every website update, one of which insisted:

It opened with a quote that stated "The first terrorist in this country was a drug dealer, and nobody did anything about it." The film didn't go on to elaborate exactly who this first terrorist was, because we were immediately plunged into a montage with real-life footage of bodies lying in the street, SWAT teams swarming into buildings, and assorted white powders on cracked mirrors. This was interspersed with reenactments of shoot outs filmed in pick-n-pull lots where Mexican gangsters in red bandannas and white tank tops hid out amongst piles of old junky cars.[...]

"The producer of the documentary recommends that children as young as 10 should see this movie. Gangs and cartels are targeting even younger children now. Shockingly, eight year olds are the new cartel target for drug addiction. Every child is at risk." [...]

Workers at Yaw's in NE Portland - Unite and Demand Justice
Whose Restaurant?
"A People Power - Worker Power - Rise Up For Justice" story that ends on a good note. "Each worker involved demanded a different amount which was owed to them due to unpaid but mandatory meetings, trainings, and "soft opening" shifts. Yaw's also charged some workers uniform laundry fees which resulted in less than the required minimum wage."

Yaw's Worker Victory
On January 18th, a group of workers from Yaw's Top Notch Restaurant took a stand. Leading the delegation into the restaurant, the group of 10 workers were accompanied by 30 community members from We Are Oregon and the Industrial Workers of the World. To the shock of bosses and customers (and to the smiles of kitchen staff) a worker publicly read a letter addressed to the owners and management demanding over $1,200 in back wages that Yaw's has refused to pay. Less than a week later, with signed checks in hand, these same 10 individuals celebrated victory won through solidarity.

Yaw's Top Notch Restaurant was an East Portland staple for over 50 years. Three decades after they closed their doors, Yaw's is now back and wants you to believe that it's still the landmark it once was; a place where you can experience what it was like in the "good old days" when customers and employees were treated like members of the family. [...]

The workers were supported by members of Food & Retail Workers United (FRWU), an IWW coalition of the union's food, retail and distribution workers committed to workplace democracy and global solidarity. They received additional support from We Are Oregon (a project of SEIU locals 49 and 503), which organizes against wage theft in the Portland metro area. The Yaw's workers, who took the lead in coordinating the campaign, made a commitment to each other to not give up until all 10 workers demands were met. [...]

Anonymous hacks DOJ to avenge Aaron Swartz
Anonymous also posted an editable version of the website, inviting users to deface it as they pleased. Multiple pages -- not only the home page -- appeared to allow users to alter them.
In anger over the recent death [SUICIDE!! HELLO!?]of an Internet activist who faced federal charges, hackers claiming to be from the group Anonymous threatened early Saturday to release sensitive information about the U.S. Department of Justice.

They claimed to have one such file on multiple servers ready for immediate release.
The hackers apparently hijacked the website of the U.S. government agency responsible for federal sentencing guidelines, where they posted a message demanding the United States reform its justice system or face incriminating leaks to select news outlets.

"We have not taken this message lightly...."
