From the open publishing newswire: Any attempt to block anyone from nourishment must be seen as a human rights violation. This Saturday protest city structural violence by joining the protest against city closure of St. Francis.
Our culture has conditioned us to deal with such problems by removing the offending persons, or in this case, closing the "attractive nuisance." In doing the latter, we blame the poor for their predicament. Our faith tradition calls us to a higher response. The solution is not to close St. Francis' doors to the poor, but to take moral ownership of the conditions creating the suffering of those whom St. Francis' serves.
Please join the procession (5 blocks) from Buckman School (320 SE 16th) to St. Francis Dining Hall (330 SE 11th) on Saturday, Dec. 7, at 10:30 am. (Our church bazaar is held the same day from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, but you can participate in both by attending the bazaar before or afterward.) This procession will demonstrate support for the program to the City of Portland and the police department. [ Read More... ] St. Francis plan for park problems rejected
Robin was arrested at the National Demonstration against HLS in New Jersey (USA) on Sunday. Cited with a 4th degree violation of a court order - Robin was allegedly the 51st person to enter the "50" person protest zone at the lab. After 15 activists held a loud and colorful demonstration at Somerset County jail on Tuesday, the court reduced Robin's bail by half from $50,000 and with a 10% option can get out on $2500.
This arrest, imprisonment, and bail is unconsionable and a petty police attempt to intimidate and silence our efforts to annihilate Huntingdon Life Sciences. Don't let them succeed! We need help in the following two areas:
1. Help us bail Robin out. He is a 58 year-old British gentleman being held in one of New Jersey's most corrupt prisons. If you can lend all or part of this sum please call SHAC as soon as possbile at 732 545 7560.
2. For as long as Robin is imprisoned we all must double our efforts to make life miserable for HLS scum!!

Author Ursula K. LeGuin will lead a march from Pioneer Square to Representative David Wu's office this Friday, December 6th, at 5pm, and will deliver a petition against war on Iraq. The Portland Peaceful Response Coalition (PPRC) is hosting the demonstration as a part of their regular weekly rally and march. The PPRC has been holding weekly rallies against war since the US bombing of Afghanistan in October of 2001.
Over 200 Writers from around the world have signed the "Writers and Artists petition against War on Iraq." In the United States and England, respected and well known science fiction and fantasy authors such as Ursula K. LeGuin, Terry Bisson, Jeffrey Ford, James Patrick Kelly, Ellen Datlow, Karen Joy Fowler, Michael Moorcock, John Kessel, Lisa Goldstein, Kelly Link and many others have signed in protest. The petition is available online at: http://www.douglaslain.com/aawii.html
The petition states that writers and artists have a special responsibility to combat deceit and distortion, and suggests that the public is not being told the truth about the heavy civilian and military casualties a conflict with Iraq would cause. "There is a strong possibility that a war on Iraq would benefit the very terrorists the US is supposed to be opposing," Douglas Lain said. [ Full Story ]
From the open publishing newswire: Mujeres Luchadoras Progresistas, or Women Fighting for Progress, began as a project of PCUN, Oregon's farmworker union, to support and meet the needs of farmworker women, who, often caring for children, or unemployed, represent a vulnerable and often-opressed segment of the farmworker community. Out of this beginning the project has continued to grow and has also incorporated itself as a separate non-profit entity in the past year. The group has organized itself, written bylaws, and elected a board of directors to oversee progress and help with decision-making.
A coalition of Canadian peace groups today announced their intention to send an international team of volunteer weapons inspectors into the United States later this winter. The coalition, Rooting Out Evil, are recruiting inspectors through their newly launched website, http://www.rootingoutevil.org. "Our action has been inspired by none other than George W. Bush," said Christy Ferguson, a spokesperson for the group. "The Bush administration has repeatedly declared that the most dangerous rogue nations are those that:
1) have massive stockpiles of chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons;
2) ignore due process at the United Nations;
3) refuse to sign and honour international treaties; and
4) have come to power through illegitimate means.

From the open publishing newswire: On November 6, the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sent a letter to Voices in the Wilderness (and co-founder Kathy Kelly) imposing a fine of $20,000 for delivering medicine without a permit to Iraq on two occasions in 1998. OFAC simultaneously sent a letter to Handelman, imposing a fine of $10,000 for alleged travel-related expenses on his November, 1997 VitW delegation. This notice was similar to ones received in May and June of 2002 by other members of that delegation... Since January, 1996, VitW has sent roughly fifty delegations to Iraq, all of whom have witnessed the devastating conditions of civilian life resulting from over twelve years of the most comprehensive embargo in the history of the U.N.
Handelman will respond to the Treasury Department and call on invited members of the public who support the efforts of VitW this Thursday at Noon at the old U.S. Customs Building at NW Broadway and Glisan. After a brief presentation, the support action will move to the main Post Office across Hoyt Street where Handelman and others will prepare statements and gather medicine to send in the mail to Chicago.

From the open publishing newswire: As soon as they arrived at the panther apartment they immediatly kicked the front door open and shot mark clark in the heart. This was at 4:30 in the morning. Radical lawer william kunstler tells us that the police say they entered with a warrent that said there were guns at the apartment, he tells us "everyone knows the panthers have guns, you go there at 4 in the morning you are looking to provoke". What kunster didn't know then but we know now thanx to declassified documents from the cointelpro files (some of the ex agents who brought us the truth about cointelpro paid with their lives) is that the f.b.i had a floor plan of the apartment and had drugged some of the occupents using an agent named william o'neil. So with eight in the front and six in the rear the police ran in shooting from both ends of the apartment. After killing mark clark officers shot 18 year old brenda harris, she was hit twice yet survived. Officers after shooting their way into chairman fred room gave this verbal exchange "That's fred hampton...Is he dead?...Bring him out. He's barely alive he'll make it"...These statments were heard by fred's partner deborah johnson who was very pregnat with fred's son. After they brought his body out two more shots were heard, these shots were fired point blsnk into his brain."He's good and dead now" they said.

From the open publishing newswire: Attached is an Action Alert from Martin Gonzalez of the Latino Network, calling upon concerned civilians to call or e-mail Mayor Katz to demand Chief Kroeker's removal. The message includes talking points and a copy of the letter sent by the Latino Network. Now is the time for EVERYBODY to be in solidarity with Latino companeros and companeras!
"We need your help to continue our campaign to remove Chief Kroeker. Mayor Katz has stated she is not asking Kroeker to resign. Help us to change her mind! We need you to call her office at 823-4120 and or send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org... Make your calls and send your e-mails today. And call on five of your friends to do the same.
"Below are some talking points that might be useful. I've also attached the letter we submitted to Katz last week.
"1. The Latino community is deeply concerned about the leadership of the Portland Police Bureau. Just this morning, the Chief re-confirmed his unwillingness to take responsiblity for his offensive actions toward our community by blaming Oregonian reporter Steve Duin for releasing an 'inaccurate, inflamatory and irresponsible' report about the police award ceremony. The Chief also said that, in retrospect, he would have done one thing differently: he would have explained his intentions to our community before awarding the medals. His assessment shows a gross misunderstanding of the MejÃa Poot tragedy and the pain it has caused our community."

forest activist that were arrested in the summer at the blockades at the borg timber sale have been issued summons to court for their arraignment this month, the 17th. At this point we know that 2 people are being charged with Interfering with a Agricultural operation, Interfering with a PEACE officer, and Disorederly Conduct. These are misdemenor crimes.
These activists were arrested at the Borg timber sale roadblockades in the late summer/early fall. 4 people were arrested for misdemenor charges, tortoise, echo, moonsprite and shade. 3 people got felony charges, tortoise, Mike d, and pitch. The misdemenor charges were from the blockades, the felony charges were from the july 30th timber sale auction protest. tortoise was arrested at the blockade, pitch was arrested out side the jail that tortoise and moonsprite were being held in. The officers visited her house and didn't find her there.
All 6 of these people, at their scheduled arraignments in Sept/Oct, had "no complaint" filed against them. At that point the district attorney has 2 years to file a complaint. They have filed complaints against tortoise and echo for the charges listed above, that are the result of their arrest @ the borg blockades. None of the felonies have surfaced at this time.
The newly scheduled arriagnments are on DEC 17th, @ 3:00 at the Clackamas County Courthouse in Oregon City, Oregon, Room 200. The accused have the option to reschedule. From what i understand at least one of them will be appearing at that time, carpools will meet up at the CFA office (1540 SE Clinton) as early as noon and leave for the courthouse @ 2:00pm. This information is subject to change. Please keep in touch, we need your support. 503-241-4879
Borg 4 (all 4) forest activists have been charged.
As mentioned before the activists arrested in august/september from the road bloackades at the borg timber sale are bing charged, despite the fact the district attorney filed a no complaint at their first araignment. Their new ariagnments are on the 17th of december. The new news is: all four are being charged, no felonies left. [ Newswire Article ]

I was writing an email when the strike hit. "Writing an email"; what an anachronistic term now. So out of date, old fashioned, maybe even charming. No more emails now, since the Big Black-Out or the BFBO as we sometimes call it.
It's amazing, really, how everything changed in an instant. It took a long time for many people to accept it. Some never did of course. They still spend their time trying to set up turbines in the falls, or make batteries, or pedal their computers back on. These are legitimately creative people, but it's pointless. I just want to say, "Look, it didn't work the first time. Don't you get it? Don't bother with that stuff." Or in a few generations we'll be right back where we started, setting ourselves up for another BFBO.
That's actually what the email was about, ironically; that, unless we forget all this stuff we've learned -- or that's been crammed into our heads -- and teach ourselves real skills again, that we won't be able to survive. I think I was on the second "v" when everything just clicked off and powered down. It was surreal how silent the hit itself was. No bang. No flash. Not even a "click!" The shot not heard around the world. It all just stopped, just like that.

From the open publishing newswire: Tuesday evening, November 26, 2002, at the Friends Meeting House in Portland, Afro Colombian citizen Clemencia Carabali Rodallega spoke with great sensitivity and emotion about her country. Her presentation was translated by Natalia Cardona, staff member in the Peace Building unit of American Friends Service Committee.
This event was part of tour being conducted to inform the American public of the situation in Colombia. Clemenica spoke about the civil war, the guerillas, the para militaries, the drug trafficers. She related all these to the particular plight of the Afro Colombia population which make up a significant percentage of the population of 40,000,000 people, and who don't have title to their ancestral lands.
Since childhood Clemencia has been participating in community activities. She is the founding member of the Municipal Women's Association (ASOM) which works in partnership with the Process for Black Communities (PCN). Founded in 1993, the PCN is a network of 120 local organizations created to help Afro-Colombians maintain control of their ancestoral lands, as well as recognition of their culture and ethnic identity. The PCN also challenges national privatization, exploitation of natural resources and infrastructure development in the vast rainforest region of the Colombian Pacific Coast.
From the open publishing newswire: Discussion on the news wire has led to plans for the inaugural meeting of what is is being called an Anarchist Knitting Collective. However, many comments to the original post came from folks interested in sharing the skills in sewing and quilting.
UPDATE: The meeting time has been changed to this coming Friday, 6:00 PM at the Red & Black. Also, this group is going to need knitting needles, yarn, thread and other such supplies. If you have these supplies and would like to donate them post a comment to the story below!
Radicals and anarchist, contrary to their portrail in corporate media, are not bomb throwing terrorist. They seek to reclaim community and love from "popular" culture. They get together with anyone that is interested anarchist or not every Saturday to play soccer and other games. Food not Bombs feeds sisters and brothers around the world not as an act of charity but in a spirit of mutual aid. Knitting circles and collectives are not a new idea. This too is spreading as a tool of liberation.
What sort of activities this group will be involved with and what sort of revolution it will create is yet to be informed. It is limited only by its collective imagination. Join us to start something that will touch the hearts and minds of trapped souls.

From the open publishing newswire: This essay provides a referenced introduction to some of the information available that leads to the conclusion that the government of the United States was aware of the possibility (if not likelihood) of the attacks that occurred on 9-11, and made decisions that allowed them to occur... In my research into this subject, I have found that very few of the facts presented here are in question.
There are quite a number of other areas where substantial evidence leads to the same conclusion of prior knowledge (for example, the massive trading in the stock of just the two airlines involved in the attack, the subsequent activities of the government to cover-up these realities and to stop any investigation into them, and the strange activities of George Bush on that morning). The topics highlighted in this essay are simply those that seem the most clearly documented, provide the most compelling evidence for prior knowledge, and at the same time have given me the greatest insight into the motives behind letting it happen and the likely consequences for our governments activities in the future.
I have written this essay primarily because the facts and conclusions have not been organized and focused in the way that makes the most sense to me. I believe that the public record presented here adequately supports these conclusions are: 1) the Bush Administration clearly knew about the threat of such attacks; 2) the Bush Administration was warned urgently, explicitly and often during the summer of 2001 that such attacks were immanent by our allies; 3) not only did the Bush Administration do nothing to respond to the threat or to the warnings of immanent attack, they actually scaled back existing counter-terrorism activities; 4) because there is no way to plausibly deny either their knowledge or their negligence, the Bush administration has deceived us about what they knew and have obstructed all attempts to investigate the causes and circumstances of their failure to protect us from the attacks on 9-11.
From the open publishing newswire: In an unprovoked act of aggression, riot police attacked a peaceful protest on Wednesday morning. More than a thousand protesters, including hospital patients, children and retirees, were rallying in front of the Maternity hospital when police officers on the scene opened fire with a rain of rubber bullets and teargas. As protesters ran for cover, two more platoons of riot police blocked off the street at both ends and began firing indiscriminately into the crowd with rubber bullets, shotgun pellets, teargas grenades and a water cannon. Dozens of protesters suffered the effects of teargas inhalation, and more than 35 were seriously injured by rubber bullets.
Police attacked again on Thursday morning, using teargas and rubber bullets to disperse a highway blockade in Soyapango. Workers from the ASTRAM municipal workers union had blocked the Boulevard del Ejército in protest against Wednesday's police brutality. Police arrested twelve union members, many of whom were badly beaten in the process; they are being held under charges of "Public Disorder," although Sandoval has threatened to increase their charges to "High Terrorism" for setting off firecrackers. Also on Thursday morning, police attacked a STISSS rally in front of the Zacamil hospital, with truncheons swinging. Modesto DÃaz Jovel and René Edgardo Rico, two prominent STISSS activists, escaped onto a public bus, but were pulled off of the bus and beaten by police; they are being held under phony charges of robbery, for allegedly stealing a security radio. Jovel and Rico will be arraigned this afternoon, but under the Salvadoran legal system the judge could order them held without bail for months until their trial begins. [ Read More... ]

In 1999, there were about 100 million people practicing Falun Dafa in China, but the Chinese Government banned it that year, in one night the police suddenly rounded up 10's of thousands of practioners and beat them up. Thus began a nightmare of persecution that continues to this day. To Date 518 deaths have been confirmed, but some government officials informally have admitted those tortured to death by police to be more likely in the high thousands.
