From the open publishing newswire: This current illegal 'war' (why don't we declare war anymore? too chicken?) is costing me, you, and everyone else in our society big-time. What comes around goes around. It's infuriating and saddening, of course, but it can also be rich with nearly-amusing irony.
The case of the Care and Treatment of the Flag of the United States of America is one such irony that is on my mind today... see, I drove over the Stars and Stripes on my way home from work. Yep, fallen of the vehicle of some great Patriot or another. There was too much traffic for me to go back and get it - downright dangerous duty that - so I could burn the damned thing. Too bad.
Now personally, I could give a fuck about any flag, including that of the country I happen to have been born in. Just so you know where I'm coming from. But once a U.S. flag touches the ground, the thing is supposed to be burned. I've burned several personally, as a Boy Scout. [ Read More... ]

From the open publishing newswire: An Oregon bill aimed at limiting food labeling laws, including GE labeling, has been passed by the House Agriculture & Natural Resources Committee in a 6-1 vote. It will now be debated on the floor of the House sometime late this week or early next week.
The bill, HB 2957, which was introduced by Rep. Jeff Kropf (R-Halsey), the Chair of the House Ag & Natural Resources Committee, has been rewritten to be quite ambiguous. The new text of the bill states: "SECTION 1. (1) A local government may not impose a requirement for the disclosure or display of information on a food label. (2) If a food is subject to a federal requirement for disclosing or displaying information on the label, a state agency may not impose a labeling requirement regarding the same information that is more stringent than the federal requirement."
At a public hearing last Thursday, two representatives from NW RAGEand a representative from a newly formed anti-GE group in Portland, GE Free Oregon, spoke out against the bill, while representatives from the Grocery Association and a group called Oregonians for Food and Shelterspoke in favor of the bill. The 7-member House Committee passed the bill in a 6-1 vote. The lone dissenting vote was cast by Rep. Kelley Wirth (D-Corvallis).

From the open publishing newswire: On Saturday April 5 at noon, a horde of women dressed in shades of pink and black appeared in the Sears store in Washington Square. In groups of two and three, the women entered the mall and walked the corridors, meeting curious stares. By the time the third and fourth group of pink-clad women appeared, many were curious enough to ask questions, and were handed (only at their request) a pink slip w/ access numbers for Code Pink local and national organizations.
The invaders gatherered at the central escalator and together rode the escalators up and down several times. A humming sound soon emanated from the scene -- what was that tune? -- Why it sounded a lot like "All we are saying is 'give peace a chance'" Indeed, moments later, women's voices could be heard harmonizing the words and tune of that very song, louder and louder.
The women hit their stride at the escalator bottom, and walked the corridors repeating the refrain over and over and over, to the mostly delighted faces of passers-by, pausing before a window featuring "spring colors" (guess what - pink is IN this year!) for a photo op and continuing serenade.
On Wednesday, 9 march, Code Pink will hold a vigil at SE 12th and Hawthorne. A meeting will be held at a member residence close by. Sorry guys, women only allowed at meetings, though you are most welcome to form a Code Pink "auxilliary."

From the open publishing newswire: Saturday evening, April 5, 2003, Greg Palast, nationally acclaimed investigative reporter, currently working for the BBC, spoke in Portland at Portland State University... The evenings address was spirited, witty and full of information concerning the hypocrisy of both Bush Administration's. Hypocrisy is actually too mild a word for some of the facts this excellent investigative reporter dug up concerning conflicts of interest and downright criminal conduct by the Bush family.... Palast talks about some of the military boondogles foisted upon the American taxpayer by the military industrial complex. Of the 80 billion dollars Congress recently gave the president, the Carlyle group is receiving 450 million... [ Full Story and audio file ]
He asks, "Who won the first Gulf War?" And it turns out that, among others, Chevron won. "Who will win the second Gulf War?" Well, according to Palast, Carlyle, Bechtel, Halburton and Lockheed, again, among others, are lining up at the blood and grist trough.
From Indymedia: Two International Solidarity Movement (ISM) activists, including American Brian Avery, 24, of Albuquerque, New Mexico suffered an attack by Israeli machine gun fire today in Jenin. Avery was shot in the face when he and fellow activist Tobias Karlsson of Sweden, who was uninjured, left their apartment to investigate gunfire. Avery was reportedly wearing a fluorescent red vest with a reflective white cross when he was gunned down. He was later transported to a hospital in Haifa for medical treatment.
"We had our hands up and we were wearing vests that clearly identified us as international workers when they began firing," Karlsson said. "Brian was shot in the face, and it looks like he was hit by a heavy caliber bullet because of the extent of the wound."
Another member of this group, Rachel Corrie , ISM activist from Olympia, Washington, was killed on March 16 while trying to stop an Israeli military bulldozer in the Gaza Strip (news - web sites). She fell in front of the machine, which ran over her and then backed up, witnesses said.

Timmel Duchamp, the people of Reading Frenzy and the IPRC, and many others will gather at SW Park and Salmon, at one o'clock on Saturday, April 12th, for a Portland Peaceful Response Coalition (PPRC) sponsored protest against the USA Patriot Act. The event will focus on the new FBI presence in public libraries and on free speech. It will include a brief stop at the Central Library downtown, where a list of 'subversive' or questionable books like the Koran, the Anarchist Cookbook, and other banned or censored titles will be checked out en masse.
The protesters also hope to make the connection between the war on Iraq and the attack on civil liberties at home, pointing to how the climate of fear and uncertainty around war creates a pretext for the dismantling of basic rights.
