Articles that pertain to racism and anti-racism including, but not limited to, prejudice, institutional racism, discrimination, and solutions can be found here. To educate yourself about the very real nature of hate-crimes and what is being done about it (and how much more work needs to be done for generations to undo what has been institutionalized into Amerikkkan "culture"), go to this post and check out the links. Consider forming a group in your area, educating and confronting the racist nature of our society that permeates every level of everyone's lives. Just being pale-skinned gives privilege that carries with it responsibility to confront and actively oppose racist beliefs/actions/institutions wherever you go. Racism is not a "state of mind". Nearly a year has passed since Portland anti-racists successfully shut down the main venue for the "Hammerfest" gathering of the white supremacist Hammerskin Nation, which was held in Sherwood, Oregon. The main hosts of the "Hammerfest" gathering were members of the Portland-based Volksfront International, a group that originated from Oregon and which is by far the most significant neo-Nazi organization in our state. Now Volksfront are on the move once again and we are called to respond. Volksfront have small chapters nationally and internationally. This Labor Day weekend they are holding their annual organizational gathering, the "Althing," in Missouri. A clear and consistent message must be sent that Portland doesn't tolerate the maneuverings of violent racists, and we will continue to expose these hate-mongers as long as they continue to organize under the banner of white nationalism. Something clicked when reading about Spain's basketball team doing the Chinese eye thing. My mind wondered back to The story a couple years ago of the German solders making derogatory comments about Harlem and black People. Both of these stories highlight socially unacceptable behavior being committed in an environment of different social norms. At first I thought the word was hypocrisy, where always doing things here In America that would be considers socially abhorrent elsewhere.

On March 8th, 2007, a year and a half after he gunned down Fouad Kaady in the streets of Sandy, officer William Bergin had another kind of showdown, in another kind of town... A town where police officers are not so quick on the trigger, and not so shy on the truth.
Bergin, a violent and angry man, showed up at the home of his former girlfriend, in the wee hours of the morning, around 3am. He was drunk, he was frightening, and he was despicable. His ex girlfriend was terrified. With a shaking voice, she called the Sherwood police in tears, requesting assistance. When the police arrived at her home, they found the drunk and belligerent Bergin, and arrested him. He was charged with DUI, and taken downtown. Apparently, Sherwood is a more enlightened town than Sandy. Domestic violence is an enormous problem among police officers. Sometimes, this epidemic of violence makes the news, as when Tacoma police chief David Brame shot his estranged wife and himself in front of their two small children in 2003. Usually, however, this abuse is shrouded in secrecy. As Bergin's abuse has been, until now.It's a very serious breach of the public trust when an officer who has been a perpetrator of domestic violence is allowed to continue to work in a position of authority, carrying a badge and a gun. How are we to expect him to react when he is expected to respond to a domestic violence call? Will he take the crime seriously? Or will he identify with the perpetrator?

ICE does not need warrants to make arrests or to conduct raids. Since July 2007, raids have increased the number of detained migrants from 18,000 to 26,000 nationwide. Homeland Security relocates 700 detainees a week in the United States. A contract with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, the largest and primary investigative branch of Homeland Security, expanded the Northwest Detention Center and and expanded its housing capacity, making it the largest detention center owned by GEO Group on the West Coast of the United States. The Migrants in the facility are mostly from the Northwest regions of Oregon, Idaho, Alaska, Washington. Due to the increase in raids they've recently come from places like New York, Puerto Rico and Guam. ICE agents move the detainees to the facility under the cover of night. In a report titled, "Foreclosed: State of the Dream 2008," United for a Fair Economy details the catastrophic losses inflicted on Blacks and Latinos in the U.S. at the hands of predatory lenders - "the greatest loss of wealth to people of color in modern U.S. history." With more than half of Blacks in many cities caught in the subprime trap - and with even these usurious financing schemes disappearing in the wake of the bubble-burst - the prospects for Blacks to amass wealth have grown bleaker than at any time in living memory. At the current rate, it will take 5,423 years for Blacks to achieve homeowner parity with whites.
The money-lenders have already sucked the value out of whole communities, urban and suburban. The wealth loss is staggering: People of color have collectively lost between "$164 billion to $213 billion over the past eight years," with Latinos losing slightly more than African Americans. For the average American, wealth is passed on through the value of homes. That dream, as the report concludes, has been largely foreclosed.

Immigrant Rights organizations are calling on all of their allies to come to Salem on Tuesday to participate in a rally from noon until 1pm, and to testify at a legislative hearing which will take place from 1pm until 4pm. Last Friday, a historic protest rally was held, with over 3000 Oregon residents in front of the state capital. Hundreds gathered on the steps of the Capitol, while three rooms were filled to capacity with people watching the hearing on closed circuit TV. The new license restrictions come from an executive order signed by Governor Kulongoski in November, allowing the Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles to limit documents accepted from immigrants. Last night, at about 10 p.m., a devastating fire broke out inside the two sheds of the former Mira Lanza warehouse (each about 500 mts square) in the Marconi area of the city. 250 Rrom citizens had take shelter in the sheds, living in very harsh conditions. The fire broke out suddenly and spread with unprecedented speed throughout the sheds of the derelict warehouses. Some of the Rroms noticed the flames and gave the alarm, allowing all the families, including 100 children, to make their escape. When "called to attention", the bastard pulled out a knife, stabbed Carlos, the comrade, in the heart, and another antifascist militant in the lung, while trying to run out of the tube station. Carlos died, the other guy has been badly hurt, but doctors say he will live.
The others in the group of antifascists chased the bastard, and beat him within an inch of his life, until the police arrived and attacked the antifascists. There's been demos all over the state, many ending in riots, which in turn have seen some arrested and wounded by the police. This is particularly worrying, if it could be any more, by the fact that the 20th of November, the traditional show down between the scum and the antifascists is so close.
