Imperialism & War
peace, anti-war, anti-imperialism, anti-militarism.
The Green Point was in Kuwait September 8th through the 12th, and is now heading into the coastal waters off of occupied Turtle Island. It is expected at the Port of Tacoma this weekend. East Blair One terminal on Alexander is the expected point of landing. The ship is estimated to be arriving late Friday night or early Saturday AM, and is expected to generate traffic on I-5 late nights from Monday through Wednesday, 9PM - 3AM each night.
From the open publishing newswire:
Join the Honduras Solidarity Committee this Sunday October 18, 4pm at Liberty Hall as we unveil our campaign to educate and mobilize our community to take action is support of the restoration of democracy in Honduras. Given the recent failed negotiations between representatives of Zelaya and the Michiletti government, and with "elections" slated for the end of November, it's important too take action now!
About 300 or so people rallied and marched to mark eight years of war in Afghanistan.
THEREFORE: I estimate that we're going to see a military load-in (incoming Strykers) at East Blair One on or about the October 18th - October 22nd time period and should make observations on the ground before that time to prepare for that eventuality.
The Israeli Ministry of Defense has notified the Anderson family's lawyers that Israel perceives the incident on 13 March 2009 as an "act of war." This classification was made despite the fact that Anderson's shooting occurred during a civilian demonstration and there were no armed hostilities during the event or surrounding it. [Tristan] was taken to Tel Hashomer hospital near Tel Aviv and to date remains in the hospital facilities. He has had several life-saving surgeries and his prospects for recovery are unclear.
From the open publishing newswire:
On July 28, troops in Honduras ousted President Manuel Zelaya and flew him out of the country. Praised by the traditional left for his economic policies and social reforms, Zelaya's alliance with Hugo Chavez and growing relationship with the ALBA countries were sharply rebuked by the more conservative sectors which also disapproved of his periodic attacks on the United States. From Costa Rica, Zelaya declared: "This was a plot by a very voracious elite, which wants to keep this country in an extreme level of poverty!". However, it seems improbable that the Honduran elite would have toppled the democratically-elected president without Washington's prior consent and support, despite assurances to the contrary.

Since then, Guard Home legislation has been introduced in a dozen states, and new efforts are underway in another dozen states. The big highlights of the first half of 2009 were Maryland, Oregon, New Mexico, and New Hampshire. The Guard Home campaign is a long-term effort, and we did not expect to see legislative action this early in the campaign. Yet legislative action we got, with hearings in all four states, and an (unexpected) floor vote in New Hampshire. The highlight of the session was undoubtedly Oregon, where a spirited effort won majority support in the House. http://www.democracysquare.org/files_public/Way-to-Go-Oregon.jpg

In one of the most highly militarized places in the entire world, a van and a small group of people took the military and the police off guard. They were surprised. They had no idea what was going on. Imagine, if you will, how the scene would have unraveled if instead of three people doing a blockade there were ten or twenty or more? From the open publishing newswire:
Thirteen people were arrested last night along various exits and onramps on the I-5 corridor between Fort Lewis and the Port of Tacoma. Some others were detained but released. Looks like everyone will be out of jail today... Just the first night and we were able to mobilize perhaps seventy people in Lakewood from as far away as Seattle, Portland and remote places on the peninsula... Blockades of people popped out of nowhere during the night at various exits to I-5 and took the convoys and the police by surprise... Convoys were successfully blocked, albeit for a short period of time... If we do things right, this will be the first major anti-militarist and anti-imperialist action during Obama's presidency. We can send a clear message nationally that this administration's policies are terrible as the last. As Angela Davis puts it, "... a black face on white imperialism and capitalism... " This round of military shipments, unlike many in the past, places us at a very interesting and crucial point. There I was all alone in the coffee shop located in the Justice Center waiting to meet with Malcolm who was going to join me for coffee before going up to see Judge Evans. Malcolm arrived about 5 minutes after I did, we shared some jokes and he told me that Grant was going to try to make it and join us in court. Grant came and the three vets walked over to the park to enjoy the sunshine and wait for 1300 to come around. |
