LEONARD PELTIER: Show Your Support on May 20 at 7 pm

Leonard Peltier, Waiting for Freedom From the open publishing newswire: An educational forum focused on the ongoing case of incarcerated American Indian activist Leonard Peltier will be held May 20, 2009, at 7 pm, at the Native American Student and Community Center at Portland State University.
Recently, Peltier was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for a sixth consecutive year, in honor of his remarkable success in furthering causes of peace and human rights from behind bars during his 33 years of incarceration.
On the campaign trail last fall, President Obama met with Native American leaders and indicated his willingness to consider clemency or to support parole for Peltier. The May 20th event is part of a nationwide effort to renew support for Peltier's release now that Obama is in office.

Sea Lions, WDFW, and TOKENISM

From the open publishing newswire: I am writing from the Yakama Nation. And I want to say that I just saw the most shameful thing. It involves video taped footage of a press conference held by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (and also ODFW) at the Bonneville dam. The press conference was to convince the public that these organizations need to, and can safely kill sea lions to protect salmon at that dam. And to make their point, they paraded out a woman presented as a Native grandmother. It was the most shameless display of tokenism I have yet seen, and went mostly unchallenged by the press who eagerly lapped it up and patted her on her head. It was disgusting.

Report on Sunday's Free Gaza protest at Pioneer Square

From the open publishing newswire: Around 250 people gathered Sunday afternoon at the corner of Pioneer Courthouse Square in downtown Portland (of course forbidden from using the square itself, because Portland's main public square is PRIVATELY owned....but that's another issue). The protesters, as in the Tuesday and Friday protests, were mainly from Portland's Arab-American community. Supporters from the peace and justice community were also present, and the protest lined the sidewalks on all four corners at SW 7th and Salmon.

Local Activists Drop Banner in Solidarity with Klamath Justice Coalition

klamath From the open publishing newswire: This morning at 8:20 local activists hung a banner over Interstate-84 in solidarity with tribes of the Klamath River, who have called for a Day of Action against Pacificorp, which has stalled the removal of its four outmoded dams, which are choking life from the waters and communities of the Klamath Watershed.

Warren Buffet, the owner and wealthiest person on the planet, has repeatedly refused to remove the dams—disregarding indefensible costs to the environment, as well as the cultural, physical, and economic wellbeing of indigenous, agricultural, and other local communities in Southern Oregon and Northern California. Not only do the dams prevents salmon from spawning upriver, but they have also brought about large growths of algae toxic to fish, plants, and humans.

Caravan To Support The Struggle For Survival On The Front Lines Of Resistance at Big Mountain

black mesa resistance From the open publishing newswire: Indigenous nations are disproportionately targeted by fossil fuel extraction & environmental devastation and Black Mesa is no exception. At this moment Peabody Coal Co. is planning to seize tribal lands and massively expand dirty coal strip-mining operations. In 30 years of controversial operation, Peabody's Black Mesa Mine has been the source of an estimated 325 million tons of CO2 that have been discharged into the atmosphere.* If expansion plans are permitted, ... Coal from the Black Mesa mine could contribute an additional 290 million tons of CO2 to the global warming crisis!*

Institutional racism has fueled neglect and abandonment of public needs such as water, maintenance of roads, health care, and schools. Daily life for Big Mountain residents hasn't changed too much over the years, except that more of them have become elderly and now struggle with daily chores. Due to lack of local job opportunities and federal strangulation on Indian self-sufficiency, extended families are forced to live many miles away to earn incomes and have all the social amenities which include choices in mandatory American education. On behalf of their peoples, their sacred ancestral lands, and future generations, residents of Black Mesa continue their staunch resistance to the efforts of the US Government, which is acting in the interests of the Peabody Coal Company to devastate whole communities & ecosystems, and de-stabilize our planet's climate for the profit of an elite few. We are at a critical juncture and must take a stand in support of communities on the front lines of resistance now! By assisting with direct, on-land projects with the Sovereign communities of Big Mountain, Black Mesa you are helping families resist an illegal occupation and to stay on their lands, who serve as the very blockade to coal mining! Projects include chopping wood, water catchment, health care, corral, roof, & home repairs.

** There is a caravan heading out from Portland. If you want to participate, we will be having weekly organizing meetings in October

VIDEO - Indigenous Warriors block international shipping in solidarity with Tyendinaga

From the open publishing newswire: Video Entitled "This is Coast Salish Territory"

On Monday April 28th, 2008 Indigenous Warriors on Coast Salish Territory blocked a vital intersection used for commercial shipping to the United States. The action was done in solidarity with the Tyendinaga Mohawk community. Five Warriors from Tyendinaga had been arrested and attacked by the OPP days before. SWAT teams and paramilitary units were on Tyendinaga Territory surrounding dozens of other unarmed Warriors who were peacefully occupying a rock quarry claimed to be on their territory.

Solidarity actions also happened in Six Nations and Guelph. With the mounting pressure from coast to coast, and steadfast position of the Tyendinaga Mohawks the SWAT teams and paramilitary units left Tyendinaga Territory without additional attacks.

Since their arrest, three of the five Warriors have been released on strict bail conditions. Two Warriors, Clint Brant and Shawn Brant are still in state custody.
