News Reports for Ultra-Short Attentions
ON YOUR MARK, GET SET. . . Shepard Smith prepares. Mr. Smith, let it be known, does not like verbs. Whenever he finds one, he crinkles his brow in disgust like a man who has discovered a dribble of food on his tie. He taps furiously at his keyboard, moves the cursor to the offending word and deletes it, or else adds "ing," turning the verb into a participle and his script into the strange shorthand that passes for English these days on cable news:

"Amazon.com celebrating a birthday! The Internet company 10 years old."

"Texas! A school bus and two other vehicles colliding in Dallas. The bus rolling over on its side."

"We don't communicate in full sentences anyway," Shepard Smith said as he continued working through his script. "We don't need all those words. And it allows us to go faster."

Jay Wallace, Mr. Smith's producer, said he wants Fox News Channel's "Fox Report" program to seem perpetually as if it might veer out of control. "I want it to be like a train that's about to come off the tracks," he likes to say.

Who rules the corporate media? OPERATION MOCKINGBIRD,CIA,state media since 1940s
It is beginning to dawn on a growing number of armchair ombudsmen that the public print reports news from a parallel universe - one that has never heard of politically-motivated assassinations, CIA-Mafia banking thefts, mind control, death squads or even federal agencies with secret budgets fattened by cocaine sales - a place overrun by lone gunmen, where the CIA and Mafia are usually on their best behavior. In this idyllic land, the most serious infraction an official can commit--is a the employment of a domestic servant with (shudder) no residency status. This unlikely land of enchantment is the creation of Operation MOCKINGBIRD.

Recent Iraqi Citizen Poll - Another Dodgy Dossier
Media reports treated last week's poll of Iraqis, commissioned by the BBC, ABC News and others, as the population's definitive word on the war.

But how representative of Iraqi views is it?

The poll also fails to take into account the UN's lifting of sanctions in May. These restricted access to food, medicine and basic materials. Perhaps it was the end of sanctions, more than the end of Saddam, that improved Iraqis' "day-to-day lives".

Hollywood: the Propaganda Machine
If you thought the days of Hollywood acting directly as a propaganda machine for the government ended with Warner Bros.' anti-"Jap" WWII cartoons, you haven't been paying attention to the people behind the silver screen: Drug Warriors, Pentagon brass, and intelligence officials. I'm not talking about ways in which ingrained patriotism may make people want to make their country and its institutions look good. Instead, I mean the State using quid pro quo to directly influence movies and television to the point of causing scripts to be changed. Meet the almost unknown power players of Hollywood:

Reviewing LeGuin's the Left Hand of Darkness
Never having been a big reader per se, I think that I can attest without duplicity that my readership is in fact overly sceptical. So on the occasion when I peruse the literary scene I have in mind nothing and thus seek out a story that I have neither read nor seen. Something that grabs my attention. Suffice to write, I am often lead to writers who happen to be female and also works that deal in some way with sexuality. The Left Hand of Darkness (©1969, Penguin paperback), the early work by LeGuin, was something I came across in reference to sexuality and science fiction.

Terrorists on US soil!!!
Below are two articles that describe how 100% pure blooded white Americans were convicted of possessing weapons designed for terrorist acts in the US. However, aside from these articles, one from UPI and one from The Guardian (UK), the only other news articles I could find (using the Google news search) were local news articles from Texas (where the terrorist lived and were caught). Contrast that with national publicity, and the gloating of John Ashcroft, at finding a few African Americans and Arab Americans in Portland OR guilty of terrorism for "thinking" about fighting with the Taliban to defend Islam, and attempting but failing to reach Afghanistan, and for finding some Americans of African descent in Lackawanna NY guilty of terrorism for joining a training camp in Afghanistan, or thinking of joining it, only to find that it was not to their liking, and returning home to the US for an ordinary life

Debunking the Media's Lies about President Aristide
If you believe the stories of the corporate media and the Bush administration, you would think Aristide is getting what he deserves. He is a "corrupt dictator" who abuses human rights. He is a "psychopath" who advocated "necklacing" his opponents. He didn't do anything to bring Haiti out of poverty; in fact, he made Haiti more poor than ever. All of these statements are distortions or outright lies. Aristide's true crime was the same crime committed by L'Ouverture 200 years ago: he stood up to the powers that be. He empowered the Haitian people and belied the racist caricature of Haiti as a land of savage, voodoo-practicing black people who aren't fit to govern themselves; the view expressed by William Jennings Bryan when he said "Think of it, niggers speaking French," or by Pat Buchanan when he disgracefully referred to Haitian refugees as "the Zulus off Miami Beach." Aristide showed those who painted the Haitian people as ungovernable savages needed to take a look in the mirror before they presumed to control the affairs of Haiti, and for that, he had to be deposed.

It's really not fair to dignify the reporting in America's papers of record as "journalism", most of that appears to happening by serious writers "eking by" outside the mainstream.
