Kucinich demands Iraq withdrawal timeline
Dennis Kucinich and Congressman Neil Abercrombie (D-HI) are working on legislation to establish a timeline for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq. Writing in USA Today on May 16, Kucinich and Abercrombie wrote:

"We feel this course, with its echoes of Vietnam, is unsustainable. It has already added $200 billion to our national debt and costs U.S. taxpayers more than $1 billion per month. It jeopardizes the strategic interests of the United States, particularly in Asia and the Pacific. It alienates allies in the Muslim world and elsewhere, hindering efforts to create a united global front against al-Qaeda and other terrorist organizations."

"Unlike World War II, where the enemy surrendered and the troops came home, there is no such prospect in Iraq. We must define an endpoint. We will soon introduce legislation to achieve that goal by bringing the occupation of Iraq to a close."

Conyers for President 20.05.2005 22:40
Conyers calls forum on freedom of press
Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich) today announced a forum to happen on this coming Tuesday --

"MEDIA BIAS AND THE FUTURE OF FREEDOM OF THE PRESS"

On Tuesday, May 24, at 1 p.m., Rep. John Conyers, Jr. and other Members will host a forum concerning the state of the freedom of the press in this country.

There are few liberties which are more precious to our citizenry or important to our democracy than a free and independent press. Unfortunately, in the present environment, the fourth estate appears reticent to cover numerous issues of genuine public import, and has frequently retreated in the face of criticism and threats from government officials.

For example, the mainstream media has largely ignored the implications of the "Downing Street Memo," which points to a secret agreement between the Bush and Blair Administration to not only go to war, but create the conditions necessary for the war. Similarly, in the wake of the Newsweek "retraction" of the Koran story, the Administration has sought to mandate that the magazine alter its coverage of our involvement in the Middle East.

Tuesday's Forum will provide a timely opportunity to assess the nature of media bias and the extent that press freedoms are at risk in the post-9/11 world.

Red Cross validates Quran abuses
In an unprecendented move, the International Committee of the Red Cross threw itself in the middle of the Newsweek controversy by public acknowledgment of documented Quran abuse cases. The ICRC says it has credible information that U.S. personnel at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, have mistreated the Quran.

NPR reported the story days after Newsweek retracted a story making similar allegations. NPR, of course, must be careful to be "balanced" in their reporting, so the NPR story stressed that they are not validating the specific story cited by Newsweek.

Newsweek, of course, never broke the story anyway: the Newsweek report was basically a report of ICRC, Human Rights Watch and other previously reported stories. (What Newsweek added was that when they checked with the Pentagon, the stories were - at first - confirmed.)

Needless to say, there are other violations just as disturbing that haven't even seen daylight in the press yet. How many people died due to the events reported?

People are tuning Fox out!
This comes from a business/economics blog -- "bonddad's diary" --

"Fox News Viewership Falls 58% Since Election"

April '05 marks "the sixth consecutive month where FNC declined versus prior month in M-F, primetime P25-54 (every month since Nov '04)," CNN's press release says. The 25-54 demo is coveted by advertisers. One insider called it a "downward spiral." FNC still has more demo viewers than CNN, though (445k vs. 304k in April).

Maybe the American people are smelling the coffee and waking up. Maybe they've finally had enough of the Bush-shit.

Hope some of them are smart enough to tune it all out and check out Indymedia!

Conyers on White House Newsweek Scam
Congressman John Conyers today attacked the bullshit White House scam to shift the blame for blasphemous abuse of the Quran by U.S. interrogators in Gauntanamo. The White House wants Americans to believe that NewsWeek magazine is responsible for rioting and deaths -- the anger and resentment of Islamic people all around the world. But we know that the White House is responsible. The U.S. neo-con PNAC administration is responsible.

Conyers: "What we are witnessing is nothing more than an attempt to intimidate the press corps so that they will be afraid to do their jobs. Simply put, we must not allow this to happen, particularly when the struggle to hold this Administration accountable has been so difficult."

There are serious, serious questions about the White House's conduct in the Newsweek matter. More importantly, there are countless unanswered questions about documented and verified cases of detainee abuse and other matters. These questions must be answered.

CONYERS OPEN LETTER TO WHITE HOUSE:

A Bear on the Loose
A bear has been spotted running through my community today. The police tracked it throughout the day, and eventually chased it back into the woods out by the airport. This evening, I saw a report about it all on the corporate media, and wondered what I was seeing. In the news broadcast, I saw images of the "big bear" taken from a helicopter in the skies above, and heard a frightening tale of the "marauding" bear. Police cars cruised the area, calling from loudspeakers to people, asking them to say indoors. It looked like war.

What the little airplane scare was for
In part, as suggested in story today --

 http://portland.indymedia.org/en/2005/05/317213.shtml

it was the ongoing campaign to intimidate -- "Dr. Chaos warns DC workers just how vunerable their lives are."

But there's always a combination of motives that collude and conspire: in the case of the obvious phoney story about an errant little airplane shutting down DC for a couple of hours -- that was to give corporate media a big nothing to spin about. Reason? Bushco don't like the way people are continuing to "act out" their general discontent around the issue of judicial appointments.

That's right -- the filibuster issue. If today would have been a slowed-to-a-crawl-newsday, what would there have been for the masses to watch on the evening news? JUST ONE THING -- Princeton University students and friends performing their popular filibuster show! Especially now that the show has moved from the Princeton campus in New Jersey to the Capitol in DC. NOT what Bushco wants people to watch or even become aware of.

Check out the webcam --

Tax-exempt "Patriot Pastors"
Reality once again outdoes the most outlandish fiction. You'll look at this and think that it must be the background for the latest satirical farce on politics coming out of Hollywood.

But it seems to be reality! There's a Baptist minister in Pearland, Texas, who actually dedicated himself to creating, and succeeded in creating, a network of "Patriot Pastors" to lead evangelicals to the polls in 2004 to vote for Bush/Cheney and Republicans in general. Rick Scarborough is his name, and he is tireless in promoting his "conservative Christian" way of thinking. He is also, needless to say, well funded by wealthy supporters. If those supporters paid the expenses of anyone else to organize and promote Republican Party agenda and candidates, such contributions and expenses would be subject to income taxes and property taxes.

Scarborough is involved in training fundamentalists to get teaching credentials so as to take teaching positions in the public schools. He recruits "conservative Christian" candidates to run for the local school board and city council. His "patriot pastors" have begun a campaign to expel Democrats from their congregations in the South, unless the Democrat "sinners" will come forward and repent by registering as Republicans. They attack high school sex education courses as "of the Devil" -- as well as the "godless theory" of evolution.

Here's what corporate media is saying --

"U.S. employers added 274,000 workers in April, 100,000 more than economists expected, as companies shrugged off higher oil costs and bet the economy will bounce back from a first-quarter slowdown."

"The Labor Department today also boosted its initial estimate for job growth in March and February by a combined 93,000. Incomes rose more than forecast and employees worked longer hours."

The reality, however, is something different.

New Study Of US Media Pro-Israel/Zionist Bias is Out
study of the Times has generated considerable controversy, with New York Times Public Editor Dan Okrent's column in the paper last Sunday referring readers to the organization's website --  http://www.ifamericansknew.org -- to look into the matter for themselves.

The new study to be released on Monday analyzes two-years of coverage on ABC, CBS, and NBC evening news programs. In addition, the report will contain previously unreleased information regarding Associated Press coverage of this conflict.

If Americans Knew Executive Director Alison Weir, who will be presenting the findings, says that these reports should serve as a wake-up call to the American public. "By looking at this coverage statistically, choosing clear, objective categories, we have found an extremely useful, non-subjective tool for measuring the accuracy of media coverage on this extremely important issue. Our findings are highly disturbing. Full and fair reporting on the Israel-Palestine conflict and the ongoing peace process is absolutely necessary if the United States is to act as an honest broker

Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) 06.05.2005 18:32
Pay no attention to Michael Jackson and the Run Away Bride!
Eighty-eight members of Congress have signed a letter authored by Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) calling on President Bush to answer questions about a secret U.S.-UK agreement to attack Iraq, RAW STORY has learned.

In a letter, Conyers and other members say they are disappointed the mainstream media has not touched the revelations.

"Unfortunately, the mainstream media in the United States was too busy with wall-to-wall coverage of a "runaway bride" to cover a bombshell report out of the British newspapers," Conyers writes. "The London Times reports that the British government and the United States government had secretly agreed to attack Iraq in 2002, before authorization was sought for such an attack in Congress, and had discussed creating pretextual justifications for doing so."

"The Times reports, based on a newly discovered document, that in 2002 British Prime Minister Tony Blair chaired a meeting in which he expressed his support for "regime change" through the use of force in Iraq and was warned by the nation's top lawyer that such an action would be illegal," he adds. "Blair also discussed the need for America to "create" conditions to justify the war."

The members say they are seeking an inquiry.

"This should not be allowed to fall down the memory hole during wall-to-wall coverage of the Michael Jackson trial and a runaway bride," he remarks. "To prevent that from occuring, I am circulating the following letter among my House colleagues and asking them to sign on to it."

Eighty-eight members of Congress call on Bush for answers on secret Iraq plan.

The letter follows.

(from a Derrick Z. Jackson article in The Boston Globe) excellent comments by Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka on the inherent insularity of Americans and their culture.

As an American who has also lived many years in other countries, I've recognized this constantly (even given the pervasive influence of US corporate media consolidation  http://www.corporations.org/media/ on general American ignorance) across the board, no matter what a person's education or 'political' orientation is. While the article contains other comments on the current political regime, to me the crux of it all is summarized in the following two-paragraph excerpt:

RECESS - where does Smith stand?
The Senate recessed today at 1:26 p.m., EDT, with Republican senate leader Frist still failing to pull the trigger on the nuclear option prior to the Senate's weeklong recess. Frist had earlier promised to go nuclear before the end of the week -- but it looks like he has "blinked".

The Senate will be back on May 9, but that really means May 10, because Congress generally takes a day to get revved up and going. Janice Rogers Brown and Priscilla Owen got passed out of the Judiciary Committee last week, but the Committee yesterday postponed its scheduled vote on William Pryor. (It appears that the Committee has also postponed scheduled votes on two other judicial nominees -- Brett Kavanaugh and Terrence Boyle.)

Frist clearly had the votes to get Pryor, Boyle, and Kavanaugh out of the Judiciary Committee, since Owen and Brown were confirmed on straight party line votes earlier in the week, but he failed to do so. What does all of this mean?
