When questioned on New Year's Eve about the inevitability of war with Iraq, Bush replied to a reporter, "I'm the person who decides that, not you." Reminds me of a Caesar of Imperial Rome who contemplates world conquest as hoards of barbarians gather at the gates.
There are alot of frusterated activists out there - and with good reason. However, emotions aside - what is the best way to accomplish change in this society as it is right now?
The North American Social Forum is a gathering of NGO's, civil society groups and citizens, taking place this August in Vancouver. It is the first ever such conference to be held in North America, and it is dedicated to the idea that another world is possible.
The reason should not be hard to grasp. Our economic system depends upon never-ending growth, yet we live in a world with finite resources. Our expectation of progress is, as a result, a delusion. Capitalism is a millenarian cult, raised to the status of a world religion; like communism, built upon the myth of endless exploitation. Just as Christians imagine that their God will deliver them from death, capitalists believe that theirs will deliver them from finity. The world's resources, they assert, have been granted eternal life.
In 1974 80% of oil income went to the state. Today 80% of Venezuelan oil income goes to the rich, and to "operating costs." Only 20% goes to the state. Chavez reforms will help reverse this in January 2003. This is why the coup-plotters, "strike"-promoters, and corporate media are in such a hurry to overthrow the fairly-ELECTED Chavez government. They want to prevent these reforms, and reverse others already-implemented. Reforms that help the poor and lower middle class. Massive corporate-media disinformation, destabilization campaign going on inside Venezuela. Support President Chavez! Please forward widely.
Are you a person who sees the world going terribly wrong? Are you unable to devote your life to worthy causes you feel most passionate about? Then please look at this proposal, those of us who are able and willing need your support to stop this war that threatens to launch World War III.

feature from baltimore indymedia about Phillip Berrigan
Phillip Berrigan believed that if a law were immoral that it was the work of a true Christian to break it and to stand in witness to the true law of God: to love one another and love one's enemy's by standing against injustice.
When you line the various corporate media up next to each
other you quickly see who's copying what, who writes their
own original content -- most importantly who simply reprints
what the AP corporation tells them to write blindly. Here's
a bunch of stories I came across in an effort to do that.
Phil Berrigan died December 6, 2002 at about 9:30 PM, at Jonah House, a community he co-founded in 1973, surrounded by family and friends. He died two months after being diagnosed with liver and kidney cancer, and one month after deciding to discontinue chemotherapy.
Clear Channel is, undisputedly, the media Goliath. There is but one shining, undefiled hope- public access. Format TV is a long-due concept that couldn't have come at more vital time.
We would like to start a new feature here at Indymedia - the Oregonian Watch. "Practically Indispensible"? Yeah, right.
Discussion on the news wire has led to plans for the inaugural meeting of what is is being called an Anarchist Knitting Collective. However, many comments to the original post came from folks interested in sharing the skills in sewing and quilting.
BuzzFlash was pleased to recently interview Naomi Klein, the foremost author chronicling the adverse impacts of economic globalization. She also reports on advocacy efforts against a homogenized world of brand marketing.

so i never did hear about anything going on in Portland for Buy Nothing Day. Hopefully that means something covert is being planned and we'll all hear about it afterwards?
The NATO summit in Prague (November 21-22) has been met with a week of peaceful protests.
This morning Big Brother AOL is blasting a headline about which stocks will make money off the war. Ugh. Let's see a picture of Steve Case's smiling robot face juxtaposed next to the picture of a dying Iraqi child. Is there not the slightest bit of decorum or decency left in the hearts of the moneymadmen? "The prospect of an invasion of Iraq has investors feeling jittery," it tells us in its inhuman, flat voice. "But the reality might not be so bad for the market. Some sectors and some well-positioned companies may even thrive."
Outrage over the activities of our government has lead to increased activism and awareness. However, a side-effect is the growing disillusionment and fragmentation of progressive activists.
On the milder side I am embarrassed, on the darker edge, heartbroken. Folks, read your own wounding divisive rhetoric. I find it ironic that Robin says no one walks their talk. This hurtful polarization throughout the articles on the peace march defiles what might have been peaceful actions. Peace begins with me. Peace begins with you. How are these stabbing arrows peaceful? Robin, I will not talk your talk, or walk it.

At Sunday's protest, the cops roughed up a boy (16 years old?) for allegedly jumping on a cop car. They held his wrists so tightly that his fingers began to turn blue. Thankfully, there were lots of people around to get it all on tape and give the cops some good ol' fashioned verbal abuse.
CNN, MSNBC, and major corporate media are reporting in depth on the Catholic Church's sex scandal, but ignoring the coverage of the condemnation of war. Major story from the Guardian of London.

The conditions in Third World sweatshops and the relationship between sweatshops and imperialism.
The Portland Peaceful Response Coalition earned some street cred tonight when the No War Drum Corps and a group of peace activists crashed Senator Gordon Smith's victory party downtown. The Republicans responded with violence, dragging the activists out of the hall where they pushed them around and threw several to the ground.

Santee-Sioux spoken word artist and public speaker, John Trudell, 56, has rare, charismatic vision, and can be very inspiring to people getting beaten down in their attempts to continue a consistent social challenge. another account of the oct. 22 march.
The October 22 march was a great feeling event! There was free food, t-shirts, and drums for great community spirit. There was certainly a tremendous energy in the crowd as we arrived back from the march empowered, strong, and loved by one another! With Mike D released from wrongfull imprisonment there was certainly a lot to celebrate! We danced inside city hall and took the streets without timidity! No compromise in the face of fascism!
